I don't think there is a study on the "sweetest" wine. It's all based on experience.

As for white, ice wine probably is the sweetest. They are wine made from grapes which has been left until the freeze starts. By then, the grape would be shrivel and concentrated, so the sugar content tend to be very high. The high sugar content and the process of fermentation would allow sweet wine with lower alcohol content. Various Napa producer make sweet white wine and sweet ice wine, such as Joseph Phelps and Freemark Abbey. You can find them at local stores. Canada makes excellent ice wine called Inniskilling.

Another sweet American white wine is botrytis, which is made with white wine grape and infect them with a fungus called Botrytis. As a result, the grape is shrivel up like the same effect as the frost does. Robert Mondavi's Botrytis is my favorite.

Other sweet white wines includes muscot (well know from Italy) and reisling (from Germany, Austria, and Alsace in France). France has its own sweet white wine called Sautern (famous Sauterns include Riussec - wine of the year from 3 years ago - as well as Chateau d'Qyem - about $250 per bottle). One way to guess whether it is sweet is by looking at alcohol content - the lower the alcohol, the higher the sugar, since the sugar is used to make alcohol.

As for red, Port is probably the sweetest. Port is made from grapes normally found in red wines, but they stop the fermentation process by addition of hard liquor, ie whiskey or something similar. As a result, the alcohol content is very high. Napa has many good port producers. Favorites include Heitz and V. Sattui. If you want the best, however, try the Portugese.

Fine a harvest or ice wine. They are made from grapes that are picked after the temp falls below 20 degrees F. They are very sweet.

I don't know who... but if you buy a Muscat Canelli that is a sweet type of wine... I like the Muscat Canelli from Mastantuono Winery, but I live in the area. I don't know if they have a big retail business.

However, there are bigger, more commercial wineries that make Muscat Canelli.
