steve cut me off.
I follow him and ran him off the road.
Steve is now stuck in a ditch and many hours late :)

Why wasn't this question posted in Homework Help or Mathematics - this had nothing to do with commuting.

Besides, there aren't too many places in the US where Steve could average over 100 MPH for 5 hours without the police arresting Steve regardless if Steve driving a car or popping wheelies in his motorcycle.

Speed * Time = 600 or Time = 600/Speed
(Speed + 20) * (Time -1) = 600

Substituting the Time into the second equation:

(Speed + 20 ) * ( 600/Speed - 1) = 600

Multiply, Simplify, Multiply all terms by Speed, and solve for Speed.

Let r = Steve's speed

600 = rt

600 = (r + 20)(t - 1)

600 = rt + 20t - r - 20

r - 20t - rt + 600 + 20 = 0

r - 20(600/r) - r(600/r) + 620 = 0

r - 12,000/r + 20 = 0

r^2 + 20r - 12,000 = 0

(r + 120)(r - 100) = 0

r = 100 mph, discard -120

Yes, this is possible. The info given is stated in distance, then the change is presented in speed, looking for a result in a change in elapsed time.

TD = S
TD - 1hr = S+20mph

Where T = elapsed time
D = Distance
S = Speed

Do the math.

His speed is 100, as previous posts note, you need to form an equation, substitute T in terms of S and solve by factoring or using the quadratic equation.

Steve was traveling at 100mph to get 600 miles in Six hours. If he were to travel at 120mph that means it would take Five hours being one hour less. True.

It would be more than 1 hour less if there was a 20 mph difference...but it would depend on the speed....I was assuming he was going less than 100 mph

100m[h = 6 hours
120 mph = 5 hours

Hopefully he was on the Autobahn. :)
