Impossible to answer really.
All dogs make wonderful pets, provided they are trained well, and given the love and attention they deserve :)
Purebreds cost more, and do generally have more health problems though.

If you want a dog for a specific reason, want a certain personality, or like the look of a certain breed, get a PB. If you don't care and just want a pet, get one from your local shelter. Both PB and mutts make great pets. Illybubs - "mixed breed dogs can have less medical issues if they are bred properly. generally, when they are mixed, they get the better gene combo." Mixed breed dogs are never bred properly. They can be just totally randomly bred, or bred on purpose with absolutely no health testing. When mixed, they can get the best of both breeds, or the WORST. Why would anyone, with even the most basic knowledge of genetics, think any dog would get only the best? It is a complete toss-up!

Better pet? That all depends on what you put into the dog. A mutt can be just as unruly as a purebred if not trained. A mutt can become just a vicious as any purebred if not well socialized and trained!

I'm so sick of hearing that mutts have less health problems than purebred dogs.

Are you people nuts or what?

A reputable breeder will do thorough health testing before breeding to ensure they are not passing on genetic problems. How does that make them "more prone to health problems?"

With mutts, you have several breeds that you would have to do general health testing on as well as breed specific health screening. And you really think these Back Yard Breeder are doing that? A mutt could be a cross of 2 or who knows how many breeds.......... you end up with the potential of health issues from each breed involved!!!

I think both make great pets.. I have lived with mutts, and purebreds and they were all great dogs. Overall though I prefer mutts just because they dont have inherited genetic defects as prevelant as certain breeds, they generally live longer and they are more versatile.. meaning they arent bred for a specific purpose or job they can do anything. Either way a dog is a dog and I love them all but I would never go out and look for a purebred dog to purchase.. I would rescue one if given the chance but give me a mutt any day of the week.

Proud caretaker of 3 mutts...

Neither makes a better pet then the other. Mixes are just as prone to health issues, training problems, etc as purebreds.
Wellbred purebreds from responsible breeders are actually at less of a risk for genetic issues.
It is unfortunate that because of so many irresponsible breeders cranking out puppies that purebreds have gotten a bad reputation.
Mixes do not live any longer nor are they any more versatile then a purebred.

purebred dogs are better.think about it how can a mutt be healthier than a purebred dog.the mutt will adopt all the health problems of all the dogs he is mixed with.never seen a mutt guiding a blind person.

pure bred dogs retain specific traits from their breed much better, so if a certain trait is very important to you (like a tracking dog, a guard dog, a working dog, etc) get one of those.

overbreeding can cause pure breds to have health issues though, so mutts are sometimes more healthy due to the variation of genes in the dog.

I have had purebred dogs and I have had mixed breeds, I feel that it is all in how they are raised if you spend quality time with them on a regular basis and train them to be obedient you will have a good dog.

I think it depends on which one has a better personality. Take which one you like better. I would prefer a pure bred, though.
