I have a large basement I want to have finished. There is about 870sq ft to be done. I had a contractor come in and estimate it and it was more then I thought, but I liked the system. From your experience, how much should this cost? Any 'systems' that you recommend? Thanks!

We just finished a basement with that same square footage. My husband ordered everything from Home Depot and did most of the work himself but had to have a professional come in to hang and finish the drywall, ceilings, bathroom etc. Of course, Home Depot also laid the carpet. This took a long time and cost over $10,000 still. You can check pricing with several contractors before making a decision but they probably will all be competitive.

Youu can get a neat CD disk that calculates all kinds of numbers for home projects or construction. Just fill in the blanks of what you need like how many sq. ft you have. Picture diagrams are great and the information for completing the job is all on 1 sheet for you to take to the store for supplies. OR figure out how much 1 bag of concrete covers in sq. ft. inches and take that x's 870 sq. ft. to see what you need. Home Depot is a good thing too!

I know in Utah, the base package for finishing a basement starts at $14 a sq. ft. This includes permits, layout/design, framing, electrical, r-13 insulation, sheetrock, tape/mud, carpentry and two-tone paint. We charge extra for flooring, bathrooms, kitchens, theaters, etc....
