There are several benefits from learning to speak in public. Not only does one gain the confidence to talk in front of people, but one also learns poise (i.e., how to stand and carry oneself). Finally, one learns about any idiosyncracies (like saying "ummm" or "uhhh" when speaking and how to avoid those "tics".

The benefit gained is the confidence to speak in front of groups, no matter how large or small. If you won't be addressing large groups, the benefit with smaller groups is the ability to be persuasive or informative in presentations. (your department or company)

Best benefit I've yet achieved was the pleasure of making 200 or so people laugh at the same time. I'd like to do that again.
