Five is the correct answer. During Viet Nam only five Americans earned the title of Ace. Only three of those were Pilots, since RIOs shared equal credit for all kills with a missile. Pilots got sole credit for a gun kill.
6 Charles D Bellevue, Capt USAF (non-pilot)
5 Randall Cunningham, Lt USN
5 William Driscoll, Lt Jg USN (non-pilot)
5 Jeffery S Feinstein, Capt USAF
5 Richard S Ritchie, Capt USAF

Five it is. However, in the early days of air combat, certain air forces (notably the Germans) required a higher figure such as 8 or even 10 kills. Different nations have also used different rules to determine what constitutes a "kill".

5 confirmed aircraft destroyed in air-to-air combat. Aircraft destroyed on the ground are also counted, and kept in one's records, but aren't used for "ace" purposes.
BTW, many air forces/navies don't officially recognize the term and concept of "ace". It's more for PR purposes than anything else

At least five. I think it would be really cool to be known as an ace!

I believe it's 5, but they must be 5 enemy aircraft. Shooting down your wing-man doesn't count
