First, thanks a lot. I truly appreciate you're all taking the time and effort to try and tell your particular version of a god, that it has to save me from going to your particular version of the bad half of afterlife.

I don't believe in either, but if you truly want to tell your invented being that you don't want me to go to your invented afterlife, I highly appreciate the effort. Thanks.

I'm curious though. I'm born and raised as an atheist. I have never seen prayer, nor do I have a clue how it works.

How much time do you invest in me? What sorts of things do you tell your version of a god? Do you include my full name, or just my screen name? Where do you pray? Is a ritual involved? Do you make lists of all the Y!A atheists, and name them in one prayer? Or do you say a prayer for every single person?

Can you give me an example of how you do it?

Hi Markyyy...just curious, why do you have 3 y's at the end of your screen name? Now to the questions/answers.....I don't pray for you individually or anyone on Yahoo to find my version of God. For those that believe, prayer and meditation is a way of connecting with God. I think of prayer as talking, really, conversing vs. making a wish list. Although, I do wish for some things like for everyone to realize their special talents to help make this world a better place. I truly believe that the belief of God is an experiental one. For example, we know we can't prove God exists or not. But, we also can't measure emotions and feelings....we have to experience these emotions in our reality to understand them and what makes us feel those emotions. God's the same way....until you experience God in your reality and in the way you'd expect you'd experience God, then you will always be an atheist. And, that is fine in my book, so long as we don't hurt others.

I saw a very wise and insightful person once post here in R& S that freedom ends where another person's freedom begins. Whether you believe in God is irrelevant, it's how you live your life and what you do with free will that is important.

When I pray for anyone, I never have asked God to not to let someone into His kingdom, but I have prayed that He would not send someone to hell. I think it is a nice thing if there are people praying for you. However, afterlife is something that is outside of the free will. You cannot choose between not wanting a afterlife and wanting it. Your limits with free will is choosing hell or heaven.

I could have better prayer life. I tend to pray more for the family by the name. When I pray to God, I talk to Him like I talk to my friend. He does not expect us to use big words, just casual tone. I tell Him everything. I pray for people by their name, but if I do not use the name, God will know who I am talking about. I pray everywhere, it does not have to be fingers crossed and kneeling. No rituals involved with my prayers. I have some kind of list about the people I pray for. It crosses my mind though that since people have several accounts that I am actually praying for the same person under different avatars, LOL. God knows even if I do not know. No, unfortunately I do not say prayer to every single person by name, but I might pray to people as a group.

If I was going to give you an example how I would pray for you with the little of information I have about you, but it would be too weird to do it by answering this question.

Edit: Greewood: Do not you know about the Markyyy with 3 y thing: he is asking why why why ; )

I place my trust in the Lord God Almighty of the Bible, you know. I cannot pray you to heaven, no mater how much I tried, that is the prayer you need to make. However, I believe that the prayers make difference.

I did not invent hell and heaven and they are not going to disappear if you choose to not to believe in them. They are very real.

You have never seen a prayer? I am surprised that your girlfriend does not pray for you for her being a Christian. Maybe she does not want to upset you. However, prayer is just talking with your maker. Talking about all kind of things in your life. It is like talking to the great Father. You can fool many people here and everywhere but with God you need to be real because He knows every detail about you and loves you anyway. He is wanting you to be real about you to Him. Of course I understand that this kind of thing is a nonsense to you because you do not have the relationship with God.

Maybe there is something in your life that you know that God wants you to give up, and you do not want to, and it is easier for you to deny God than change. I wanted to divorce my husband so bad for years and I did not want to go to the church because I knew that they would try to talk me to stay married. I was right. But I joined into my church anyway. I knew that I should have waited until I am ready, either to stay married or divorce...but are you ever really ready. I took that step toward faith, did that step make me sinless...no. God makes me sinless everytime I ask forgiveness. It can get frustrating for me and God when I have to ask forgiveness for the same sins over and over again. There is a learning process.

I do pray for you like I pray for the people and I normally use avatar names, God knows you people...better than me. I tell about my thoughts and wishes and I always pray God's will be done, and that always includes the free will: that is the way God designed this "operation". I pray in the God create nature, I pray in the car, I pray in the work, I pray in the bed before I fall asleep, I pray in the kitchen and I pray in the church. I am not familiar with rituals, it is very natural for me to think my prayers, sometimes I say them loud in privacy. Yes, I indeed have list of people, several high-five lists...and I pray by name, sometimes while I am answering the question.

No example this time, this is a long answer as it is. I let you know that the " Lord's Prayer" is my favorite though.: )

There is no other name, given amongst men, whereby we must be saved - this is a verse in Acts in the Bible. God the Creator, is the only One True God.

Ask God to reveal Himself to you.

For I know the plans I have for you says the Lord, plans for good and not for evil, plans to give you a future and a hope.
In those days when you pray, I will listen. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you WILL find me. I will be found by you, says the Lord. Jeremiah chapter 29 verses 11 - 14.

Prayer is simply conversation with God. There is no ritual involved, and it does not matter what name I use, God knows who you are. I do not make a list, I just pray for people as and when I come into contact with their question or answer.

Prayer changes things.
More things are wrought through prayer,
than this world dreams of.

My prayer for you is that you will seek the Lord and find Him.
He died that you might be forgiven.
He took your punishment instead of you.
He loves you, and has a plan and purpose for your life.
There is no greater love than this.

It really makes me giggle when I picture them praying for us atheists and Pagans on R&S because they don't know any of our real names, so they have to be using screen names. And as you know, there's some really funny screen names here.

Picture this: a fundie bows down beside their bed and prays "Dear Lord please lead Pirateshavepirates, Squishy, Acid Zebra, Banana Snake, Bad Squirrel, I WALK FUNNY, Lokasenna, Laptop Jesus, Markyyy and Zero Cool to the light....."
