I was in NYC for the 4th of July two years ago and it's not quite bad yet. I have also been in late August and that is really bad. It will be very warm to hot, and it will be muggy during the day. However evenings are quite nice. Wear light clothes and sandals and you shouldn't have any problem. A hat and sunglasses wouldn't hurt either.

I am about 100 miles north of the city but went to school there. It can be very hot in July, especially with all the concrete. But it is no where near as hot as your southern or south western cities and there is air conditioned places abound. Central Park is nice in July. Global warming is changing the landscape however. Seems hotter here in NY as of late.

July is new yorks hottest month. Im assuming you will be spending time in the #1 tourist spot- Times Square, and that can be a big annoyance when its 90 degrees, humid, and about ten thousand people around.
If you go, bring COMFORTABLE COTTON clothes and sunglasses. You can do it but be prepared.

Last July I helped my daughter move from NYC---it was miserably hot----but last year was unusual.
Its a toss-up, really.
