I suffer from over active thyroid. It is kind of difficult..over active is gaining weight and under active is losing weight and if not taken seriously can most definately lead to death. With over active, I am required to be on medication (synthroid) for the rest of my life. If not taken daily, there will be ill results. I notice, if I don't take my meds for 3 days in a row, in about 5 days, I feel sluggish and emotional and I usually put on about 3-4 pounds which is very tough to get off. One time I went off meds for about 2 months--I was very sluggish, walking to the bathroom would just exhaust me. I bacame very bloated. I gained 40lbs. and I was on an emotional roller coaster that went from one end of the spectrum to the other. It was like being bi-polar or having a severe case of PMS. Some thing alot of people don't know and doctors don't tell you is that when you are on a female hormonal supplement, alot of diets DO NOT work for you. Such as the Atkins or diets where you focus on just carbs or just proteins. It is all eating right and exercising and you have to work at it twice as hard at a normal dieter because over active thyroid just KILLS your metabolism. Seriously---if you or someone you know have a thyroid issue, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, see your doctor. And by all means religously take your meds.

Trouble with weight, mood, energy levels, body temperature and if a woman, difficulty in bearing children. Also can leave you prone to stress disorders including depression. These are the outward signs. A disruption in one system can lead to trouble in another. It causes an imbalance of hormones which can have any number of effects including but not limited to heart trouble.

The only thing I know is you will be really skinny and that could be dangerous. Call your doctor and his nurse. Some people have to take meds.

Same as Noota, but probably kidney disease, heart disease, whether or not it leads to heart attack. Stroke, embolism.
I assume it's the same in humans as it is in cats. Older cats are prone to hyperthyroid disease.
