Please take your dog to the vet

There could be a variety of reasons, but unfortunately none of them are simple...
It could be:

- Heart worms, transmitted by mosquitoes.
- Heart problems, as in enlarged, not pumping fast enough or too fast
- fluid in chest or lungs
- ate something she shouldn't have

In any case take her to the Vet and be prepared to maybe leave her overnight, so they can run blood work and do some x rays. Some Vets can even do these while you wait.
Medications for these conditions are usually inexpensive and easy to administer. The diagnostics on the the other hand can be expensive.
Ask for a payment plan or check out this low or no interest credit card just for Vet bills.

Hope I could help and all the best to little Tilly!

It could in part be caused by old age but it might well be an infection of the throat or lungs at her age she will be more prone to all sorts of infection or irritation. Take her to the vets immediately as it may well be something that becomes more serious if you leave it apart from the fact that she herself is probably worried about it. I have an older dog who has a problem the vet and myself think it is mini strokes but as they are infrequent it is hard to tell other than monitoring him and comforting him when he has one. Your first call in any problem that seems even minor with your dog that occurs over a few days or frequently should always be the vet.
Hope this helps

'old age' in itself does not cause coughing, there is always a specific reason. Here is a list of possibilities:

+ kennel cough
+ heart trouble
+ backwards sneezing
+ allergies (fairly unlikely for later life)
+ heartworm/lungworm

Please get this checked out by a vet as it's impossible to narrow down a diagnosis over the internet. It's especially important to go asap if the coughing occurs/increases after walks/exercise as this would be a sign of heart trouble, and she is old after all.

Yeah go to the vet as coughing could denote chest or heart problems, or it could just be kennel cough - in which case she'll just get some pills to take regularly. The sooner you go the better because the bug that causes kennel cough can take quite a while to kill, and make sure that she doesn't run around as this may worsen the cough. Hope she gets better soon.

Take her to the vet and make sure that it's nothing serious like collapsing trachea and heart problems. It doesn't sound like kennel cough because she would be hacking a lot more then 3x a day. The only way to know for sure that this isn't something serious is to have her examined by a vet. Good luck

OK, it could be any number of things. Is there a certain time when she is coughing? When someone comes to the house? When she's eating or drinking? After she plays? As she's walking, does she pull on the leash? She could have what's called a collapsing trachea- which is common in smaller dogs. what is it is that their trachea collapses when they are trying to breath too hard like when they're excited. Have your vet check her out, there's some medication to help with that.

Take her to a vet for a complete physical.
My previous 2 dogs (Cavalier King Charles Spaniels) both started coughing & the vet said it was due to heart problems.
Some breeds are more susceptible to heart disease than others. Maybe it is something less serious but only a vet can tell you for certain.

dogs (and all animals except turtles and sharks) can develop just about all the same old age related illness that we do. i would advise taking her to the vet and having a chest xray. could be pneumonia, congestive heart failure, allergies, kennel cough, a tumor...

jack russel's are so active and bouncy that i'm sure at 13 that she is more like a 4 year old!

She has a cough, take her to the vets. Mine had this, but it only took me two days to get her to a vet. 2 months???
A course of antibiotics cleared it up, lets hope the same can be said for your dog after all this time.
