Yes they are on way out. Many (MOST) calling plans include voice mail.

Not really. Most answering machines are digital and don't require tapes. Therefore they are much like the voicemail system on you cell phone. What is on the way out and will directly affect the "answering machine" market is home phone service. More and more people are getting rid of there answering machine and replacing them with cellphones. But as long as there is home-phone service there are going to be answer machines.

The voice mail on my land line has been "broken" off and on for a few months, despite repeated attempts to get it fixed.

I don't pay for it, but I like the fact that I receive emails or text messages when I get a new voice mail.

Unfortunately, because it's so unreliable, I turned my answering machine on, so I don't miss any calls.
