I was an Infantryman in Iraq in 2004. All of the bodies are searched for evidence and intelligence. If the individual is considered a "high profile" target, then the body is recovered. However, most are left for the local Imam to arrange for the removal and proper burial.

You see, under Muslim law, the body has to be buried in a traditional Muslim burial within 24 hours of the death. The US leaves the burials up to the Muslim clerics out of respect for their beliefs. If we do the burying, we would get accused of doing in wrong and denying thier people a chance in the afterlife.

Believe it or not it is better to show respect for the enemy dead, past events in other wars shows that respect will be returned.

Of course, you will have people on both sides that will do exactly the opposite.
That's why pictures of coalition troops taken showing disrespect or interfering with corpses generate hate and vice versa.

just like kilroy said. search the body for intell and move on...people will eventually come and provide a funeral for the body. they would always have them buried facing south or north, either way who cares. Sometimes our iraqi or afghani counterparts would take care of it...
