To me, New Age thinking is: a universe made up of an energy (or force) that is itself conscious, alive, infinitely intelligent, and all-powerful. And everything (including us) is just that one energy in the form of different objects, and it's sort of a game for us to discover over the course of life (or lives) who/what we really are. No judgment, no conflict, pain or suffering, just the appearance of such, for the purposes of playing this "game".

I actually like this worldview the best, it makes the most sense to me actually. But when this kind of thought started getting embraced by young people in the 60s, with Ram Dass, psychadelics, etc the US has seemed to not function as well as it did before then. People live by their own moral codes instead of a more traditional universal one. Some would say the further to the left the US has gone, the faster it falls apart.

Does New Age thinking not work in real life? Would that mean "New Age" thinking is bad/harmful altogether?

We have absolutely gone downhill since the 60s--but I don't think that Eastern Religious/New Age thinking has anything to do with that.

We stopped being families--no mom and dad in the same home (in many cases), no parent home when a child gets back from school, few going to any house of worship, whatsoever.

The economy skyrocketed to such an extreme that even in two-parent, professional families--both parents feel compelled to work full time--even overtime--when their children are young, and need them...

Gangs, drugs, underage sex, drinking (so much more) is the result of kids being farmed out to daycare centers--and later, parents simply using school as a babysitter. Little, if any, family quality time, so kids pretty much feel free to do as they please. Children are growing up far too fast.

Guilty (because they can't be in two places at the same time), parents often give their children whatever they want--and random amounts of money--and don't even know what it is being spent on.

No, it's not because of any religion or thinking that we've gone downhill--it's parents not being there to form the bond, and teach the basic life skills necessary to their children.

Remember that the 60s were about peace--we've certainly gone downhill...

New age thinking is still a minority thinking in the western world. Capitalism and fundamentalism comprise far more followers than "peace brothers" of the new age.
The war on the Middle East wasn't implemented by new agers, nor does the current religious fanaticism (of Christians and Muslims) have any relationship with new agism.
Rather than new age thinking not working, look to the extremists to find out why there is an enormous amount of dysfunctionality in the modern world.

Mankind has not changed that much since we came out of the caves. The weapons are bigger, the toys are cooler, but people are the same. Each generation tries to shock or out-do the previous one. Folks will say that the "new music" (they did this even in the 1920's) is always gonna bring the downfall of the youth. Somebody's been running around hollaring "The end is near!" since the beginning. It's just cycles. Social cycles.

that's what happens when a nation is too focused on materialism neglecting their spirituality then later on trying to fill the emptiness through eastern philosophies.

New age thinking is harmfull in such a way that there are practices that goes against peace and love. It also puts you into a world of fantasy and the danger not to face reality. And of course, the danger of worshipping Satan covered under a cloak.

lol. You mean the thought that we are all energy and here to learn is more harmful then thinking we are just soldiers in the fight for Christ and if we don't follow those rules we will burn in Hell forever? Controlling people through fear instead of freeing them with self empowerment is not my idea of a way to move any country forward.
You don't think it has anything to do with the way this country disregards their old and ignores their young? How many children come home daily to empty homes and then sit in front of the TV all night? How many of our old are sitting in homes shelved till they die? I don't think our countries troubles can be blamed on religious or spiritual groups but more on personal irresponsibility and greed.

I don't think its the type of spirituality that is too blame, I think it's the lack of. Every religion thinks they are the only , right way. If we would all live the tenets of goodness that's in all religions, and practice tolerance, the world would be peaceful. Jesus, Buddha, and all the rest must be so disappointed in the world and its people, and the hypocrisy.

I think we've gone down hill due to organized religion. We're too closed minded as a nation and we have this holier than though mentality. If it isn't obvious, the people in power are using this for their personal gain.

Some things never change. Decrying the next generation as the most depraved ever is one thing that hasn't changed since man started keeping records.

It is a liberation to me. Attending a Unity church gave me the ability to read the Bible without gritting my teeth. I loved not having to hear the 'h' word every other word.
