The poverty of today would have been the riches of the past. Poverty will always be with us, because some people have more drive and ambition then others.
If you divided up all the resources of the world equally among all the inhabitants of the Earth, with in 50 years you would have the extremely wealthy and the extremely poor.
Look at the photos of the poorest people's homes. What do you see? I see trash laying around. I see luxury items such as TVs, empty cigarette boxes, alcohol bottles, etc. laying around.
When you question the poor about these items, they say something to the effect of "Am I not allowed some small pleasures?"
But if you visit the homes of newly arrived legal aliens, you will find them sharing things and doing without luxury items.
However, within 10-15 years, they have moved into a large home paid for with cash, drive nice cars, and send their children to good schools.
What is the difference? Drive and ambition!

Just for a thought-I liked what Andrew Carnegie said-he supported libraries because they helped those that helped themselves. I don't think you can wipe out poverty or imbalances because there are always those that will strive and work for more. They deserve their rewards for their efforts. Education is the key to a better life and it is available to everyone-one way or another. Those that want to lay back and put their hands out need to get a job. While I wouldn't want a child to go hungry, I really think that by putting those on welfare to work we would break the chain of welfare. During the depression and the government put people to work on the TVA and the WPA, lots of infrastructure got built and those that needed help got it. If people weren't rewarded with welfare, there would be no incentive to stay on it.
