or if a cold-blooded murderer wanted to know where your son or daugher is, would you still tell them the truth?

*By the way, the mob or the cold-blooded killer wanted an answer from you right way, which disables you from immediately contacting law enforcement in anyway.

There are exceptions to every rule (probably to this one, too).

This question has eluded philosophers for centuries, it is great you recognise that we here on Yahoo Answers are so much better equipped to answer it :-)

Are you obliged to give someone information which would enable them to harm another? No, I don't think so.

Obviously, honestly is not ALWAYS the right thing to do, although it may still be the best policy ~ for example, refusing to give the mob guys the correct information (by withholding it, or lying) may cause them to go on a murderous rampage and kill your whole family.

It's a choice I'm glad to think I won't have to face anytime soon.

Good luck with this! :-)

well.. depends on what family member... no no kidding..

no i wouldnt... what if i were threatened with bodily harm? would i turn in my brother or sister? no way... i know talk is cheap... God only knows what goes through a person's mind when in such a situation.. but i think most people's instincts would be to protect their loved ones from harm... but here is the thing now.. i heard of situations where the criminal might hold another person that is dear to you... and threaten to kill or hurt that person unless you tell the wherabouts of another person.. now.. in THAT situation.. basically you are going to decide who is safe who isnt.. so i really wouldnt know what to do...

Maybe the saying should be changed to "Honesty is usually the best policy." Or "honesty is the best policy when dealing with other honorable people."

You bring up a good point.
