Just like most things it's subjective.
If you want a city with culture then it's got to be Melbourne. They have the best theatre, festivals, art galleries, restaurants, hey people even dress up when they go out.
Sydney on the other hand is great because of the harbour and fantastic beaches. Though it's not the sporting capital, that's Melbourne.
Both cities are great to live in, offering different things to different people. I personally like Melbourne people more because they are friendly and seem to be more in touch with what's going on in the world, plus they accept outsiders much easier than Sydney people who seem to really enjoy their cliques.
I’d prefer to live in Melbourne than Sydney, but have lived in Sydney most of my adult life, coz it’s where the better career opportunities are for my industry.
Why not spend some time in both and then make up your mind.

Both are expensive compared with other Australian cities, with Sydney being the worst. Sydney has a milder, more humid climate, while Melbourne is cooler. The Sydney climate is a lot more predictable, but I prefer Melbourne's crisp sunshine.
If you're looking for the bright, tanned, fast-paced, superficial life of the tourist brochures, choose Sydney. If you're looking for a life with a little more substance and interest, choose Melbourne.
I guess I'd choose Melbourne unless I had unlimited income.

About a million more people choose to live in Sydney than in Melbourne. I have lived in both and enjoy both but given the choice, Sydney wins every time. Sydney has everything Melbourne has apart from a few sporting events most people watch on TV anyway plus it has the harbour and the beaches which Melbourne lacks.
Both are great cities and you would enjoy living in either one, I just prefer Sydney.

who knows mate beauty is in the eye of the beholder, for me its Melbourne -people friendlier, sports galor, more culture, less wankers, easier to get around, less crime, cheaper housing, better roads and home to Aussie rules and the spring carnival (Melbourne cup) Sydney people love their little bridge and their weird looking opera house and their bondi beach (which looks like mini Tokyo) any day of the week but that's about it to Sydney.-just not for me.

Melbourne for sure!
Sydney is much too chaotic! As a pedestrian they nearly run you over by car.

I'm not sure either of them would be on my list as i traveled through both cities on my way to the gold coast 12 years ago and i did not think they would be places i would want to stay, but if i was to choose one of them it would have to be sydney.
I got lost traveling through melbourne, because of lack of road signs and lack of help from the locals, the only ones that helped me out with directions to get out of melbourne were interstate truckies that did not live in victoria.
