If I'm pier fishing, I like to tie the sinker on the bottom of the line, and the hook about 12" up from the sinker. Try to use as light a sinker as possible, so that way you will feel the fishing biting.

each little thing relies upon on the place the heck you're fishing? Alaska, Ocean, Bay? right here interior the SF Bay section, we flow stay anchovy a foot off of the backside in sandy flat aspects. We use a three-way rig that has a dropper line (12") and a three'-8' chief with a stay bait hook with the anchovy nostril hooked. maximum Halibut are caught via boat considering the fact which you will ought to get out to a minimum of 20' of water intensity. best working intensity is 25'-35' of water. by no ability use a flow considering the fact that Halibut are "Lazy" fish. They lay in wait for the prey to swim via and then strike. they might additionally be caught utilising a greenback-eye jig trolled at the back of a sluggish powered boat while tides are sluggish. 20 lb attempt line ought to be adequate, yet merely set the drags to 7-8 lbs of drag resistance.

both answers good!
I have a couple ways for set-ups u can try! I use the standard finder rig as mentioned at times but I also get some good stares whenever I rig up with a slip cork but it works so well for me I now have seen others try it too!
I will also do a modified finder rig by using a feather or hair jig as my sinker then tie off of a 3 way swivel a jig or hook rig!I work this rig slowly on the bottom and have taken trout, reds, pomps, snook, spades and many more fish on them!
I even did this for cobia off pier with the heavy jig on bottom and then tied a small 8"plastic eel on a jig off of upper rig and yes I caught 2 good cobia that day!

I agree. Use a 3 way swivel. Attach the sinker to about 12-15 inches of line and tie it to one end of the swivel. attach the hook to a 12 inch long line and attach to the lateral ring of the 3 way swivel.
