Du-uh, in a cave! Some of the oldest discovered so far are in France, but when the cave paintings were being painted, the area was not called France.

The oldest that we know of were in Lascaux, France. But those are pretty highly developed, so it's likely that there were others before them.
When I learned the purpose of these paintings, which was rehearsing hunting practices, it brought to mind that we carry pictures of our loved ones around in our wallets, to have access to their spirits as well.
