Thanks Morgan J -- I had forgotten about the piracy. "Bombarding" was the word used by the news media. You're right, the word was inappropriate and the article should have included more background. Our news media stinks!

Morgan J: Why does my simple question lead you to believe that I am "blinded by hatred of the Us?" Methinks you're a bit paranoid!

Because of Islamic Insurgents and Pirates !! US Defence Secretary Robert Gates refused Sunday to comment on the reported bombardment, saying it was "possibly an ongoing operation."

Actually Morgan J, we've also used aircraft to bomb and shoot Islamic insurgents in Somalia recently...A task force of coalition ships, called CTF-150, (Combined Joint Task Force/Horn of Africa) is permanently based in the northern Indian Ocean and patrols the Somali coast in hopes of intercepting international terrorists. U.S. destroyers are normally assigned to the task force and patrol in pairs.

The US is not bombarding Somalia. The only activity we have in the area at this time is suppression of piracy off the coast of Somalia and much of the Eastern waters of Africa. Commerce raiders were preventing food deliveries to the country, murdering seamen and raiding ships just passing by.

The continuous historical purpose of the US Navy is to ensure the freedom of the seas and the safety of those who sail. Some of you are so blinded by hatred of the Us that you never know just how you personally benefit from our efforts. Fortunately, the starving people of Somalia DO KNOW because every time a ship unloads food in their ports they can see a US destroyer keeping watch.

the US didnt bombard Somalia. it was a strategic strike on a group of extremist's in somalia. Only reason why they used a destroyer was because it was the closest option they had in the area and an air strike would have taken to long.

Maybe it's payback time. We owe some people there a visit from a B-52 or 3. Somalia appears to be one of those countries that isn't with us, so they must be against us.
