Because I believe in Christ as the Savior and second part of the Trinity.I love Him with my whole heart above all others. I strive to follow Him in all that I do and say. I am not perfect but I am learning daily to be more Christlike and one day I will be with Him God willing. Nothing can seperate me from my Lord and Savior. What can life throw at me that could challenge my faith anymore than it has already been challenged?

Being a Christian is simply believing in Christ. This has nothing to do with whether you're a good person or a bad person. However, believing in Christ makes you want to be a better person and live with the ideals that Jesus had for us which was simply to "Love thy neighbor as thyself". A neighbor would include all races, creeds, etc.

The trouble with Debra M's answer is that I would have said that ten years ago, and now I'm an atheist.
And Christians with orthodox theology therefore maintain that I can never have been a "proper" or "real" Christian.
I even understand their perspective.
I can only say, at the time, it was a real as Debra has it.
So perhaps a Christian should only answer for "today".

"If you use to be a Christian and now are not one, then you never were in the first place." is incompatible with "You have to believe in Jesus and repent(turn from) your sins."
Jesus calls those people who believe in him his people. Why should I accept your definition over his?

I know that I am a christian because of what i believe. And I believe Jesus came to earth, lived a sinless life, and took our place and died for our sins. And by believing in him we have eternal life. And I agree with you when you say that if someone says "I used to be a chrisitan" , that they were never a christian to begin with.

The Bible gives me assurance of my salvation.
For if you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved.
My own experience.
I experience God working in my life, personally.

All Christians are some Christian's apostates. As an atheist, I pretty much take Christian's word for it when they say they are Christian. However, the bloodiest disputes have been between Christians killing themselves over trivial details of their superstition.

I asked Christ to come into my heart and be Lord of my life. I have faith in the promise that he did and that because of his sacrifice on the cross I am covered in his precious blood and can stand before god on the day of atonement with Christ as my spokesman. It's simply a matter of faith and acceptance in his promises.
