I know a guy who was discharged for "financial irresponsibility" so I would say enlist first then file. As long as no one sends a letter to your commander saying you haven't paid a bill they have no reason to wonder about your credit or ability to pay bills. UNLESS you are put in a job that requires a top secret security clearance. Then they check your credit and talked to a lot of family, friends, neighbors old employers and such for that, so then it would be a problem.

Do yourself a favor: DO NOT FILE. Not only for your career, but for your future financial security as well.
My hubs filed about a year or two before we were married due to his so and so exwife. It's taken us the past 5 years to rebuild his credit so that it's sorta decent.
He's been turned down for credit cards, outrageous APR's on loans, refused credit, etc.....and creditors look at you like you're a POS for having filed.
Avoid filing AT ALL COSTS.
Bankruptcy with the military kinda works like this: they figure if you can't handle your finances then why on Earth would they want to trust you to handle multi-million dollar equipment or anything else?

Ask a recruiter before you do it. Normally it is looked at as financial irresponsibility and if they give you a waiver to enlist you will be limited to any job that does not require a security clearance which is nearly nothing.

The last I heard, bankruptcy is NOT a crime. At worst, it shows mismanagement of income. Yes, if that's the only black mark against you, the military will still take you

Do what Discreet Heat said to do...call your local recruiter and explain the situation.
Normally, the military does not accept those with financial burdens, because it becomes a burden to them.
