Medical name for ringing in the ears is "tinnitus"
which most likely was derived from "tintinnabulation" -- 'the ringing of bells'. Tinnitus can be a symptom of several problems -- of few of which are, exposure to loud noise, wax pushing on the eardrum as well as a benign tumor growing on the 8th auditory nerve. If you have ringing, buzzing etc in your ear(s) you should see your PCP or an Ear, Nose and Throat physician. Don't ingore it.

When you here a ringing in your ears or some sort of whistling, it is usually after an experience with loud noise. If this continues with out loud noise,this is called Tinnitus. If this occurs and you would like to try and seize the ringing, then there is a medication available.

So to answer your question, Tinnitus is the medical term for ringing or whistling in your ears.

The medical term for that annoying ringing in your ear or ears is called tinnitus.

It can be temporary. On and off. Or permanant.

It has a few causes such as Meniere's Disease, which is a disease of the inner ear. This causes sufferes to loose her balance, are very dizzy (vertigo) and suffer from nausea during a attack.
Another most common cause of tinitus is exposure to extremely loud noises.

It may go away. But is extremely annoying.
