u r formatting u r computer,

first decide which drive u format?, then the formatted drive "important data" will be copy to the other drive.. then u format the drive... while formatting the drive, if u r installing a new operating system (xp/2000/2003), then u don't format first time. you can easily start installation, in the installation process one time the procedure stopped at "select drive and (next screen), you want to format the drive", these options will help you easily format the drive and install a new OS.

Other wise you can right click the drive and format it.. quick formatting will be erase all the data only, but if you are not checked quick format, then it will format the drive and re arrange all drive sectors...

If you have a cd writer then load all your imp stuff onto a cd. Or a pendrive. Or if it's not too big in size, a floppy disk. Usually, for safety one harddisk is kept for storage of data when the computer has to be formatted.
Most probably, the computer technitian has the best knowlegde of it.

if ur comp has different drives , then first of all shift the imp matter to the drive which is not to be formatted (basically it is the one which doesn't has the OS. after that format the desired drive and again transfer the matter to it.......sooooo simple...
