I'm playing the drums for about 3 years, but I've never had a drum teacher. People around me are telling me that I play great. Is drum education really necessary to become a good drummer, play in a band, perhaps become famous???

I was a professional drummer for 16 years, I was totally self taught. Later in my career I did take some lessons. You can always learn from someone better than you but it is definitely not necessary for people that have a natural aptitude for drumming.

I am a drum teacher so here is my answer. Like most musical instruments you can learn them and become very good at them just by studying on your own, watching videos, etc. HOWEVER, a teacher (on any instrument) can point out problems with technique that will allow you to become a more profficient player. Sometimes, technique issues are the things that hold you back from becoming excellent, not just good. Plus, teachers help you attain results faster.

it's not necessary, but I think that teaching yourself will make you good. Being taught and given constructive criticism will make you great. You have to know what your weak points are and where you need help, and often some people don't realize this. But with the help of another, it can really accelerate your skills and talent. Just another opinion from another drummer.

No. I'm a musician playing all sorts of stringed instruments and drums as well. I'm not especially famous, but I've not set out to be.I know that my playing gives pleasure to people, partly cos the've said so,and partly cos I've been asked back for repeat gigs. I am totally self taught. Hope this helps.

No. Two Words: Buddy Rich. Taught himself when he began playing for vaudeville at 1 and a half years old. Just realize that you can do anything on your own if you practice and study your instrument.

just play, dont play around. it helps if you have your own gear. teachers help, but your ,motivation weighs more.
