That was the whole purpose of Knoppix - it is a bootable linux cd

The Ubuntu disk offers a bootable cd install as well
that is the ubuntu disk will run as a live cd that you do not have to install on your hard drive

Try Puppy Linux live too. I like the Multi-session Puppy or Chubby Puppy.
