before entering the USA we will require non US-Muslims to fill out a questionnnaire on where they have traveled for the past 5 years and require them to sign a statement that they should not hop over to another state without the permission of the INS.

This will allow the Government to keep tabs on their whereabouts. Please note that this is profiling and may appear to be racial in nature but its not. We must take all steps necessary to mitigate against an attack like we did with JFK the other day.

Lets be honest here. Airport controls in the USA (in my experience) are shameful and non-existent. I travelled between the UK and the USA extensively before and shortly after 9/11. Controls then were appropriate and efficient. When I recently flew from two international airports in the south-east there were no human checks whatsoever of my passport. I could have been anybody.

Contrast that with the efficient but strict controls at Edinburgh Airport in Scotland. Passports are checked when you check luggage. They are checked again as you approach security (along with being asked questions and being given advice on what will be required at the main security checkpoint).

The main checkpoint moves people quickly, but you are thoroughly checked. I set off the metal detector and the officer did what he had to. Another officer was nearby, actively watching. My wife's shoes caused some interest. They checked those, were satisfied and we were allowed to go on our way. Of course, our baggage was also properly screened.

As we boarded the plane there was a further check of our passports. After the gate there was a further random bag search. Again, this was completed without undue inconvenience. All the officers were friendly, helpful and considerate of my wife's and my physical disabilities.

Compare all this with indifference at US airports. No seats to take shoes off. I can only just walk on two legs. I cannot balance on one. The only interest was in boarding cards, which are only of value if the passport has actually been checked.

In short, the USA needs to either institute proper controls for everyone or admit that the government is merely putting out scare stories for political purposes.

By the way, how does one identify Muslims? Did Richard Reid (the shoe bomber) look like a Muslim at first glance?

Well, I think that airport security is very important for the safety and the well being of the innocent.

I am a Muslim and I have grown up in more than five countries throughout my childhood (my dad was an airline manager). I currently study at a reputed university in Thailand and go in and out of Thailand to my country without any problem. Even though some stupid Muslims are causing trouble in Thailand's deep south.

Sure, there is all the visa procedures, and relevant airport security measures, and you should focus on those aspects rather than focusing on someone's religion or race.

If you go about profiling other people's ethnicity, that undoubtedly makes you a racist.

By the way, do you happen to be a security expert to be saying this? You didn't say what your occupation is.

That would require some pretty honest terrorists wouldn't it?
Not that you shouldn't do everything possible to keep tabs on them but if you ask me the authorities did a great job with this latest lot, just as the Brits seem to be doing rounding up their little nut cases.
The only thing I would add to the topic is that I think we should hang them as we catch them. They want to die for their beliefs and we should assist them.
