I have great reviews and have taught every grade level including college. It seems that now, since everything is done electronically, that I never even get to show my face or even talk to anyone so I have to sell myself with my resume. Still, I don't even get an interview sometimes. I have applied at colleges, universities, public and private schools. I am located in San Antonio, Texas, am certified as both a secondary English teacher, as well as an all level counselor. Any advice?

I have recently relocated to be closer to my family. I have a new home, so moving anywhere is out of the question. Right now my husband supports us, but I really do need to find a job, just of rmy own sanity. I have great observation feed back, have taught all grade levels including college, and have never gotten less than a "clearly outstanding" review. Any advice?

Unfortunately, public schools often hesitate to hire someone with "too much" experience because they have to paythem a lot more-- and often this isn't within their budget allowance. This is not true for all public schools, but it does happen sometimes.

My best advice is to send a paper copy of your cover letter and resume directly to school principals and/or college deans (or heads of departments). Don't rely so much on HR offices, as they are notorious for ignoring some of the best candidates. Principals and college department heads usually get to hire directly anyway-- be sure they see a copy of your resume after you've formally applied throguh HR offices.

Emphasize your experience. Let them know you've done it all, you're an excellent teacher, and can handle anything.

I hope you get some calls for interviews soon... best of luck to you!

I am currently teaching English in Japan. There are plenty of jobs for English teachers here as someone previously answered, but the salary for most of them is probably less than what you are hoping for. Enough to live fairly comfortably, but most don't have any kind of retirement plans or benefits that you probably want at your stage in your career. If you have a Master's you may be able to get in at a university with a salary that will be worthwhile.

Stateside, I heard that Miami-Dade county schools have a shortage of English teachers. I saw that on a website for the Miami teaching fellows, an alternative certification program that is trying to recruit new teachers. (Only for those who are not already certified). But, you could check if the school system has a website so that you could apply directly.

Otherwise, just broaden your search. I also heard from the Teach for America program (also for those not already certified) that a lot of rural areas have teacher shortages.

Hope this helps a little.

I'm in the same boat (but not with nearly your level of experience). I have only 4 years experience in the elementary level, all with great reviews. It is insane that there is a shortage of teachers according to the news, yet there are individuals out there that want to be employed. In any case, I'm disappointed in the job situation but optimistic that something will turn up or perhaps I can discover a need and create my own....meanwhile my garden and house get the benefit of my Masters in Education.

If there aren't any available jobs for you where you are, then maybe you should try another country. If you have the necessary paperwork it's relatively easy to get a job as an English teacher in Asia if you're willing to travel. The pay there is pretty decent and if you are white, then you should have no problem finding work.

Who's looked at your resume? Maybe that's not really good.

Have you seen how many jobs are open in the area and do you know how many are really open vs how many are people moving around the district?
