My cat this morning is coughing and gagging on occasions, usually much more when he purrs or is shown attention, he done this a couple of weeks ago but after a few hours it went away.

He seems to constantly scratch the left side of his face, right at the back of the Jaw, I have looked inside his mouth and cant see anything unusual.

Any ideas? I cant take him to the vet today as its Sunday but it is a worrie.

Like most people have said here, take him to the vets first thing. It could be a number of things. He may have an abcess forming from a fight with another Tom,if his let out side, could be his teeth. Or an infection in his ear canal. He may just have hair ball and its a coincedence that he scratches at his face. He could have fleas annoying that area as well? But to be on the safe side take him to the vets. Also check for ticks. Good luck

He could have hair balls that he is trying to cough up. I have two cats that do that, sounds the same, but one cat produces the hair ball, the other cat doesn't, at least I haven't seen one yet.
Or....It might have developed a case of Asthma or some allergy, which would explain the constant scratching.
In either case, as long as your cat is eating and drinking normally and doesn't show any other signs of being serious ill, he should be fine until you can get him checked by a vet.

something that the cat ate! will be okay in a few hours: checking with vet on phone may reassure you!

Definitely take him to the vet as soon as you can. I don't know what it is but my first thought is that he might have an infection, or perhaps something stuck in his throat.
