Does anyone know what i can use to build up a really thick layer on a painting, so that it sticks out and is visible from side-view. Besides impasto that's not thick enough. Modelling compound keeps coming to mind im not sure what that is. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

modeling paste works extremely well. you apply it carfully to a primed but unpainted canvas. you can apply several layers, but i wait until each layer is completely dry before adding on. when the modelling paste is nearly dry you can mold it with your fingers and a palette knife.
you cannot paint on it until it is completely dry. I have used acrylic paints on it, but when dry oils should work as well.

Do you mean modeling clay? You didn't mention what medium you're working in or how think you want it. More details, please? I might have a suggestion but I don't know if it will work with oils. Also, what country are you in?

Okay, I had to go through a lot of my supplies but I found something called Delight Air Dry Modeling Compound. Check their website: www.paperclay.com
It comes in colors and a white that you can color with acrylic paints. It's very light, dries in just a few days, and I'm pretty sure you can spread it with a putty knife. It's very soft and easy to mold with your fingers.
Hope this helps. I wish I could see your project when it's finished.
Best of luck.

Modeling clay that you bake might be a good option if you want it to be a few centimeters thick and strong. In the US it's available at craft stores (mainly in the kid's craft sections), but I'm not sure where it's sold anywhere else. If you have a specific shape you want, you could make it out of wood if your canvas is strong enough to hold it.

im not sure if this is quite what youre looking for but oil enamel and polyurithane. its great you can build the layers up to however thick you want. my 3d painting teacher used it and the link shows one of his paintings. it stands off the canvas about an inch you can do great things with it and find the supplies at home depot or hardware store. good luck
