I have an interview with my investigator this week . Can anyone help me on what type of questions they are going to ask me, to help me prepare myself more for the job. I'm a bit nervous and feel that I'm not so prepared and do not know what she will ask from me, she said it last about 2 hours. i was suppose to go 2 years ago and didn't go on my interview, needed more time now I'm back at square one b4 my test scores expire. I'm taking Nassau's test in August but I need a stepping stone and if NYPD gives me the chance I'll take it. Any advice will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

By the way I did miss the Suffolk County test like and idiot, lol. I'm taking Nassau's test in June which is close enough. I was told that Suffolk had 30 k applicants and Nassau about 8k so I'm kind of glad I missed it. Suffolk County is really picky.

Keep it simple and truthful.
Be on time.
Look professional. (even when checking status of apps)

Write down some questions and then answer them out loud and practice practice practice. It sounds dumb but the more you answer your own questions the easier the interview will go.

Why do you want to be a police officer?

If you witnessed your training officer steal something what would you do?

If you stopped a close relative for drunk driving what would you do?

They are tough questions because answering them to the letter of the law would not be truthful = this equals dishonesty.

Be truthful about your answers and then prepare to defend why you feel the way you do. The interviewer wants to hear How and Why; and most of all wants honesty.

Would you arrest your favorite uncle for drunk driving?

- No I wouldn't.

So it's okay if your family drives drunk?

- No it's not. I would be mad and probably tow his vehicle to teach him a lesson, get him a ride home and talk to him very sternly the next day when he is sober. I'd explain to him that if it was anyone else who pulled him over he would have gone to jail, pay money for bail, risk having his license revoked and spend a couple thousand on a lawyer. Then I'd tell him if it ever happens again it would be out of my hands and he'd get no special treatment. (how and why)

This question seems basic but it distinguishes your honesty, loyalty, and reasoning both to the department and your own family and is designed to see if you will lie.

Expect a plethora of questions of this nature. And like i said practice practice practice.

I've been a police officer for 7 years. I have worked for four different departments (to get to the one I desired) and those questions are very popular.
Don't try to please anyone just be honest and be able to defend your answers and you will do fine.

Good luck.

The NYPD does not hire and fire like they have temporary workers. Once you pass whatever probation period there is (with any department) it's part of civil service and you can only be fired for cause. They are going to ask you about whatever information you have already submitted. You don't have to be nervous. Just bring documentation with you about any injuries you may have had like a broken leg etc. If you have speeding tickets or tickets for anything else, they had better be paid up real soon. Your drivers' license should be current and preferably without points.

Basically you have to tell your life story in summarized form. They are looking to see if you are a troublemaker or a decent harworking responsible mature individual. Just make sure you bring whatever they tell you to bring. Dress appropriately, a pant suit will be fine with sensible shoes since you may be in standing room only. Look professional and bring your own pen with you. Look and act responsible and you should be fine. If they ask you something you don't have the answer for make a note of it and make sure they get the answer asap.

You could have done this two years ago. Were you still in school? Other wise you are going through a lot when all you want is to join the other PD. What will you do if you get hurt in the police academy. Will Nassau take you then? Think about this carefully. Your plan could backfire. A lot of people are leaving NYPD or trying to. It's in the papers all the time. Personnel records are being held back and people can't get hired by other jobs.

Take in just for the experience of the interview the prize should be Nassau, a bit surprised that you missed out on Suffolk's test.

While with the City, I was called by both Nassau and Suffolk but waited to finish college before taking Suffolk.

Bad news is the list was frozen because of the current budgets and or revenue situations. Good news, the longer the wait, the more drop out and take other jobs that come up.

My advice is don't go NYPD... they are just hiring a bunch of people to prepare for the Olympics, and then firing everyone.

But they will ask you any and everything, financial questions, background questions, and anything that seems odd on your resume will be questioned.

They will try to fluster you but don't let them, it's a test to see how you handle people. If you get pissed at them, then how will you react with the general public?
