Nobody is a certain religion out of malice or contempt for god. They are just doing what they think god wants them to do.
So, how come all these religions say that if you pick the wrong prophet, pray the wrong way, or read from the wrong book, you will be tortured for ever in the worst of ways?
Here you have people trying really hard to please god, but just because they maybe pick door number 3 as opposed to door number 2 .... BAM
Think about it.....

wait wait religious people:
You make it seems as if I choose religion a or b I will be a bad person because you are religion c.
What if I am religion a, but I'm the nicest, kindest, person in the world. No sins except I'm christian and don't believe in Muhammed? But I still live a clean and good loving life?
or if I'm like mother Terisa, but I'm muslim and think that if I pray to Jesus I will go to hell for making him a partner of Allah?
I'm not talking about murdering babies.

Of the main religion today, Islam and Christianity have a hell we all think about.
Islam is more graphic about it, with descriptions of boiling water being poured down the mouth and such forever, for those who disbelieve.
(believers who sin a lot go to hell, but just till their sins are paid off).
Christianity is a bit more vague, doesn't really describe it so much, but it is said in the bible to really really suck...lake of fire sort of stuff.

Come on dude, you really think that without the threat of hell everyone would be running around raping and murdering each other all day?
That would imply that you want to rape and murder, but don't because you would be in big trouble.
There was and are many places in this world where people don't buy into the hell thing, and they don't have that problem...

A very good question I've been asking religious types for years. That, and similarly, "How do you know your religion is right, when followers of every other religion have just as much "proof" and faith as you?" If one believes in hell, you'll only get one response from them. In one form or another, "God says this is the right way. The devil tempts you with the wrong information, and the wrong paths. It's not his fault if you choose to ignore him. By choosing the wrong path, you inherently reject God." Yet they "know" their path is right by the same method anyone who disagrees with them knows that THEIR path is right, and nobody ever considers that they may be mistaken. Human beings...we are amazing.

There is a hell because it works better then heaven. If you tell someone they need to work to get into heaven, you have to explain why you would want to be there. Like when I was a kid it was described as you wouldn't have any worries, and you float around, and everything is nice. Well as I grew up I realized that I live for the problems I solved. I didn't want to know everything, I wanted to learn, and sitting around doing nothing was pure hell to me, so they were not very good at telling me why I wanted to get into heaven.
On the other hand if you tell someone that they are going to burn, and be tortured, in all kinds of pain FOREVER. Well people get that, and will take any other choice you give them.
Personally I feel that I do the best I can to be the best person I can and I hope I'm strong enough to face what comes if it is required for me to follow some ritual that I didn't. Because the way I see it, if this isn't just made up by people and it is really a God's will then I actually would like to believe I would resist it and do what I believe in. Just as if a super powerful race came to the Earth and commanded us to do what we feel is wrong. They would certainly be able to give us heaven or hell, but that is not the way I want to decide what is right for me. Not to mention the fact that humans have always used any large belief system to get their way by convincing people to follow them, and go kill the unbelievers.

Really, it's a misconception that all Religions have similar ideas of hell, many religions have hells, but it is a rare phenomenon, as far as I know only associated with Christianity, to believe that all non-believers go to hell...
It seems to me that it's an extra little recruiting boost for them, earning them adherents both through Pascal's Wager (via the thinking, "Nobody else is vindictive enough to care, but if their God is real is suffer forever... I'll try to be safe"), or, more prevalently, through forced conversion. I mean honestly, if this little slivery of doctrine didn't exist, it would be much more difficult to justify things like inquisitions and enslaving indigenous peoples...
The followers get to feel as if they have the moral high-ground in saving souls from eternal by making the individuals suffer in life, so it is an advantage.

If there is a hell then God punishes without mercy because hell is eternal therefore God cannot be our definition of merciful since he is torturing millions of people forever without a possibility of relief. That would mean that the sources that say god is merciful are not correct. These are the same sources that claim there is a hell. The people and writings who make this claim cannot be correct on both counts because either god is merciful and there is no hell or god is a tyrant and there is a hell. They can't have it both ways.
These sources are unreliable since they contradict themselves. If there is a just and merciful god then there is no hell. If there is a hell were screwed anyway because heaven as a tyranny would be no better.
I do not believe in hell but I can't disprove it. I can only show how ridiculous a concept it is. But so is a platypus so all bets are still on.
Edited: Apologies to the noble Platypus. I am fairly harsh in calling them ridiculous as for the record no platypus has ever offered offense to me.

All religions seems to insist they are the 'true' ones. Christians will tell you that you can go to heaven only through Jesus. Muslims will tell you only through their prophet is there salvation. Hindus will believe Hinduism is the road to Heaven and so will Buddhists.
Bahais will tell you they respect/believe in all other religions, then tell you Bahai is the best road to salvation.
The problem, therefore, is that every and each of them will exclude the others who do not worship 'their God(s)".
In my view, everyone is free to wosrhip as they wish. But to make sure not to offend others. The way out of all this is to encourage people to believe that there are many ways to God.

Well, i do consider that it is not sensible to mention "hell" in so much occasions..AND ALL folks Americans don't do it. Its very generalizing. I am American and we don't seem to be ALL approximately John Wayne. That was once decades in the past and now not on this iteration. We don't all trip horses and shoot bow and arrow. That is an historical stereo variety of Americans. Its type of claiming all Brits have unhealthy tooth..NOT all Brits have unhealthy tooth.. I believe a small populace does..however now not ALL.

God looks at a person's heart, at his/her intention's and motives, He is God, He knows what is what and who is who. A person is accountable to what he knows,
God is Loving and Merciful and does not judge or think or do things the way we do it. "For My Ways are not your ways, neither are My thoughts your thoughts, for just as High as the heavens are from the earth are My thoughts higher than your thoughts and My ways higher than your ways"†
And the reason there is a hell, is some people are very wicked. Jesus said that hell was prepared for the devil & his angels. God doesn't sent anyone to hell, evil, wickedness, unrighteous lives filled with sin does. It's what lives inside of a person's heart-and only God can judge and know a person's heart and say what is best there.

Their is a hell because there would be no point of haveing a religion that is based on faith without a form of punishment. Kinda hard to explain but think of it this way. There cannot be good without evil. Same rule applys to heaven and hell.

People have a perception that heaven and hell are places beyound the universe .... where as to my knowledge ... i am certain that Heaven and hell are the two ends of a infinite distance that is eternity and journey starts from the day we were born .....
Hell is far off from God and heaven is very close to him .... Those who shall be distant from him through him ... will be like they are in Hell ... and those who shall reach onto him with clear site and pure heart ... will be as they are in Heavens .....
This is what ive have understood so far....
