Hey KS,
-There are a lot of bike manufactures that make great bikes. The TREK Y was a xlnt bike in the mid-90's, but the technology is out dated. If you are still looking towards TREK check out their Fuel line and Remedy line of XC bikes.
-I ride personally like the Intense and Specialized line of bicycles, but there are so many good brands it will be confusing at first. Take your time shop around, visit different bikes shops, test different brands of bikes and ask other riders for their feedback on their bikes.
-If you still want a Y-bike go for it, mountain biking is great whatever bike you use. I still have my TREK Y-Glide Deluxe that I let friends use as a back up bike. Everyone who uses the bike wants to buy it. Weird?
Good Luck! = )

Oh, my, don't get a Y series... theyre outdated.
Also, theres not such thing as 'the best full suspension mountain bike', especially since a lot of things come into consideration.
One big factor is your budget. Unless you have more than 5,000 US bucks, you won't be in the ballpark to buy it.
Another, you won't get a concensus, since different bikes feel different. And there are different type of mountain bikes, depending if you want to go fast on smoother terrain, go into the mountain and get lost (so to speak), find the larges drop or sicket jump spot available, etc..
And, also, usually the best bikes are sold frame only, so also which components and pieces you put into the bike comes into consideration.
You can find a nice full suspension bike for 1,500 to 2,000. If you have 3,000 to 4,000 your in the realm of very nice bikes, and 5,000 and up you're into custom sizing, special components and nifty materials...
I think that if you're starting, but have some nice budget, go for a trailbike (a little bit tougher than XC, but can still peddal uphill).
There are several good options in the market. In no special order, Specialized Stumpjumper, Santa Cruz Heckler, Cannondale Prophet, Giant Reign, Marin also has some nice bikes, Jamis, Iron Horse MKVIII.
For a bit more, you could try Titus Moto Lite, Santa Cruz Blur, Turner 5-Spot, Ibis Mojo ( I don't like carbon too much, but this bike got great reviews ). For this bikes, Santa Cruz and Titus offer complete bikes for around 2,500 or so. Of course you can opt to buy the frame and built them pretty nice, but your budget would go 3,000 and up.
Another excelent choices can be Intense 5.5, Ventana X-5 or El Saltamontes, Titus Moto Lite Exogrid. Ventana and Titus can build a custom sized frame if necesary. Usually this is going too much, but depending on your body it might make sense. Exogrid is a technology where they take a Titanium tube, use a laser to thin the tubing and then insert a carbon fiber structure to make it stiff. But, the frames go for above 3,000 bucks, so that's pretty high end.
