On Saturday at around noon we gave my dog her flea and tick medication per the vet's orders (we need to administer it every month an this is the first time we've done it- she's only six months old). The name of the flea and tick medication is called Promeris Duo, and the brand is Fort Dodge Animal Health (we live in Belgium so you may not be familiar with the medication).
Anyway, ever since we administered it to her yesterday- she's been sleeping. She will play a little bit, or go bark at a squirrel for ten minutes, but then its back to sleep for a long time. On the package it did say that a possible side effect of the medication is that the dog will be lethargic for 24 hours, and it hasn't been a full 24 hours yet. I'm just wondering if any of you have had experience with this brand, or think that it is fairly normal that she is tired. We are planning on calling the vet tomorrow if she is not better- but I just wanted people's thoughts. By the way, she is eating normally.

most flea treatments like Promeris Duo, fronntline or advantage make a lot of dogs feel a bit off colour for a day or two after it is applied.
this doesnt happen with all dogs, but it does happen with a lot and is normal. generally, the advantages of tick and flea medication outweight these side affects, and dogs still need to be treated.

if it lasts for more than a day or two, or gets worse, take her to the vet and you might consider switching to another brand.

at the moment though, I wouldnt worry too much. just keep an eye on her - the symptoms are common.

Any change in behavior can be cause for concern, and lethargy is a symptom of several dog illnesses. Although your dog isn't vomiting or suffering from diarrhea you're right to make sure he gets enough fluids. I would strongly recommend that you take your pup to the veterinarian for a check up. He's a small dog and if he's not eating/drinking he could easily get dehydrated or his blood sugar could drop dangerously low. I am having the exact same problem! I treated my dog with Frontline on Monday night and he has been sleepy and lethargic ever since. He's eating like normal and peeing and pooping as usual. I don't remember this happening the last time we gave it to him and this is only the second time he's had it. I would recommend taking your dog to the vet. I am taking mine tomorrow. They are going to test him for lyme's disease.

I would give the dog 24 hours since it is eating normally and other than being sleepy is otherwise normal. I would consider this normal reaction the medication.

I'm not a vet but I have to tell you--I'd be leery of giving my dogs any medications strong enough to knock them out like that. There are some very good topical meds that have no side effects. Good luck with your baby.
