Keeping the Sabbath Holy is one of the Ten Commandments. Catholics fulfill this commandment by attending Mass on the the first day of the week.
If you intentionally skip mass for no good reason, knowing full well that weekly mass attendance is a required of you, then you commit a mortal sin and MUST receive the Sacrament of Confession before receiving Communion again.
This is no ploy, it is God's Commandment.

No... according to Catholic doctrine, you're supposed to go to confession before you partake in communion, if you've committed a sin since the last time you had communion--not for simply having missed mass. It's a ploy by your mom, I'm afraid.

Strictly speaking, you should not accept the eucharist while in the state of sin- this is the point of confessing beforehand. Surely you have sinned previous to accepting the eucharist before and it is definitely a sin to skip the sabbath. On both occassions, you should confess and repent. On these occasions, you should follow an examination of conscience and determine what you have done and what you should repent for. A good, quick examination can be found here: http://frpat.com/examen.htm.
To address the flood of misguided thought that insued after your question, you can either confess to a priest or confess directly to Almighty God. The Catholic church believes in both forms of confession and believes that you should confess and MEAN it. For those of you against confession to a priest who want to conjure up verses, here's some homework: James 5:14-16, Matt.16:18-19, John 20:22-23, Matt. 9:8- here's some real basic verses that support the sacrament of confession.

Man, how I love to see everyone get their blood curdled by the mere mention of the Catholic church! Not only that, they love to spew what they THINK the church is all about. Aren't they supposed to be "christian?" Geez, you people amuse me- learn about the religion before you decide what it stands for. Your accusations are sinister in nature and incredibly incorrect! Please learn about what you think you know. Like Archbishop Sheen said: "there are not a handful of people who hate what the church is. There are millions, however, who hate what they THINK the church is."

Most people understand that the fourth (and possibly the first) commandment is broken if you miss Sunday worship. (Or, in the case of the Hebrews, Sabbath)
Not attending mass will put your soul in danger. If you cannot help missing one due to illness or travel, you may say a rosary instead. Also, the Holy Days of Obligation are also considered something one should not miss upon peril of his/her soul.
This means that if you do not wish to go to church on Sunday, you have put your own feelings before others', for going to mass not only commemorates the passion and sacrifice of Christ, it also joins us together to pray for many intentions.
It is not a difficult thing to be joined together as one for a mere hour of the week.
The intention to make confession is also acceptable before partaking of communion, and should be made as soon as possible afterwards.

It's a rule. In Catholicism, missing mass is a sin, and you need to be confessed of your sins before you get communion. So, if you miss mass, you have to make confession.
It's the completion of the ritual that matters.

Actually, check with your church. Most Catholic church's today only require going to confession only once a month, some only once a year!
Today they call it Reconciliation, because you are reconciling with the Lord. If it is a venial sin, you can still receive Communion, but if it is a mortal sin, you need to go to confession.
But most of all, you need to follow your mother's advice!

My mother used to tell me the same thing. I would go to confession after missing mass, but i would have nothing important to confess so i would make stuff up. In the end i was lying to the priest that i stole a bike just to have something to talk about! Maybe that's why i don't take part in any organised religion now. BTW i think it's a dumb rule so who cares.

I am protestant, so I don't know if my answer will be totally accurate. The catholic church has made some silly rules to get people to come to Sunday mass such as confession. These things are not required. God isn't gonna send you to hell for not going to confession.

Well, my mom does that but it isn't really a rule. How old are you by the way? Anyway, it is also actually a rule but my mom doesn't tell me that really.
