my bf pretty much told me he was going to propose to me but i don't know whether or not to believe him

we've been together for almost 2 years now and he's wonderful (I'm 26 and he's 28). he's never been married or had a live-in girlfriend before. i've been married once before briefly.

he just went out of town for his best friend's wedding (i was invited but couldn't leave due to work) and we went out to dinner the nite before he left. we opened our fortune cookies to see whose was better. mine read "you will receive good news from far away." i joked w/him that he would call me while out of town to tell me he was stuck for 2 weeks. he laughed

later that nite while lying in bed he asked me if i knew what my fortune could be. i said no and he said i'll give you some suggestions. then he said "when i get back i'm going to ask you to move in w/me and give you a ring." i said he wasnt ready but he said he was or he wouldnt have said it.

he's hinted before (started last year)...

he started hinting proposals around christmas of last year but no ring yet (maybe he was working up the courage?)

i don't know if i should take him seriously or was he just trying to test the waters to see how i would react? fear of rejection possibly? proposing is a big step for a guy!!

sounds like you got it all, and you got it all figured out too. I say yeah, it could be fear of rejection, and just fear, I mean he's never had a live in girlfriend, and maybe he was just seeing if you would freak out or bail, or whatever... I think you got a good handle on this,...

Hinting is not asking. If he was going to ask, he would have. Guys will hint at cr*p to string you along. You told him he wasn't ready and you know him. If you want to get married and the guy hasn't asked after two years, he likely is not going to ask. How many years do you want the relationship to go on as it is? How much of your time do you want to put in a dead end relationship? Set some goals and if he doesn't reach them, move on. If he gives you the ring AND a date, well then congratulations. Be very careful. Time is a precious thing.

Proposing is a big step for ANYONE. Women do it too, you know!

None of us can truly tell you whether he was serious or not; we don't know you, we don't know him, and we don't know the situation between the two of you. Why not just ask him when he gets back? Until then, give him the benefit of the doubt. It sounds like he really cares for you.
