all initial terms are for 8 years. depending on which job you select will determine how much of that time is on Active Duty. I have never heard of any first terms being longer than six years however.
of course, nothing stopping you from staying on active duty after the first term, if you want.

when you enlist in the military you have a total 8 year obligation. It is usually 4 years active, then 4 in what is known as the IRR, where you can be called up. That said any combination of 8 years is an enlistment. The shortest stint is 2 years active, 6 IRR. I am not sure what the longest is but for a lot of MOS's or jobs due to the length of AIT or job training you must enlist for 6 years.

for your first enlistment you can sign a six year contract... the air force will even bump up your pay grade for doing so. But 6 years active with two years IRR is the most you can sign on for in a single enlistment period. Most people sign on for 4, rarely you can sign for to or three and spend the rest of the time in IRR

I believe so. I had enlisted in the Marine Corps, and the contract was for 4 years of active duty plus 4 in the reserves. You can always renew your contract anyways. Besides, 8 year contracts are for way too long!

your right it is 8 but from what ive heard... its 4 active 4 inactive..... But inactive means that they can just call you back if they need you.... It also depends on if its just a standard enlist contract or if your job is different like my brother who is an Air Traffic Controller for the US Army right now has a contract a little bit longer than 8 because he is moving up in ranks and other stuff etc....
