go to your regular doctor and have him recommend one. most of the specialists need referrals anyway. good luck.

An orthopedist is for bones and muscles. If nerves are involved, the doctor could call in a specialist that works strictly on hands/wrists and ankles (small bones and a lot of nerves). Hope this helps. He does need to see a doctor. If he doesn't go to a doctor he could end up with decreased use of the hand. Nothing to fool around with.

AsYears ago when I cut the tip of my finger off, a regular doctor did not know anything as to how to treat the wound. He then referred me to a hand surgeon and wow what a difference. Yes there are doctors that specialize only in the hand and that is the doctor you should seek out. As to your problem carpal tunnel syndrome should be included as a possible diagnosis.

HMO's make you start with your personal physician, and he will make a decision on if and who you should see. If you have the type of insurance where you can self refer, I would definitly see a orthopedc doctor. If you're not sure call your insurance company (their number is on your insurance card and they'll tell you your benefit information. Good luck, and I hope you get the problem resolved quick and easily!

Swelling and weakness would be addressed initially by your GP family doctor.
Function or structure of the hand would be an orthopedic doctor

Consult your regular general practitioner. He'll refer you to a specialist, either a neurologist or an orthopaedist. Best luck, get well soon!

A neurologist, I believe but you will probably need a re feral.
If you have trouble getting a re feral right away go find one on your own. Nerve damage is time sensitive. Get-R-Done

First things first.
See a general practitioner (regular doctor at a clinic) and they will refer you to the proper specialist.
