Well, here's one day in the life of this particular small town Officer. I came in early for another Officer so he could play for his YMCA league team, but it got cut short since we were having severe thunderstorms that hit just as I got in. After the storms, I had to stand by for the Fire Dept. and the Power Co. as numerous trees brought down some power lines all over my Village.
After that was done I was on patrol for a bit and had to make a callback to a person who had a question in regards to a reported incident over a month ago which I had no idea what it was about.
Then I was dispatched to a bar fight and arrested two drunk guys from the "Big City" who thought it was just like TV and that they could act like jerks and nothing would be done. Not quite, after being issued $700.00 coupons for Disorderly Conduct they were released to their wives and got to explain to them what happened and why they were arrested.
After some patrolling and running some traffic I was sent to a Rescue call. I am considered part of the volunteerFire/Rescue squad so I have to go as a First responder and assist the patient until the EMT's arrive to take over care of the patient.
After that I had about 3 hours of no calls and nothing going on I happend to stop a car with a bad taillamp and the driver had a felony warrant out of Texas for attempted Homicide. It takes a while for your back-up to arrive when you're the only Police Officer in a 36 square mile area and the nearest cop is 6 to 10 miles away.
But in the end, I completed the first rule of Law Enforcement. Wnet home safe and alive.

Well the first thing to understand is that every agency is going to be different. Also there is great varations between shifts for example dayshift is very different from midnight and evening shifts. In my department we report to work and check with the dispatcher to see if we have any messages, subpoenas or other items that need taken care of. We then get ready, check our equipment, and work e-mails to see if there are any messages from adminastration. We check in with our supervisor during a very informal shift breifing/roll call.
Following this task an officer-usually one of the new ones conducts a vehicle inspection of all the vehicles (new damage, oil, gas, lights and eqiuipment) and reports to the supervisor. At this time during the first part of the shift if their are no calls, appointments, or anything like that we usually try to get the follow up work (phone calls, visits, statement taking, interviews etc) taken care of. When this is taken care of we go out on patrol and answer calls as the come in.
We usually don't get a lunch break on most days due to fact we deal with drunks for the remainder of the night. It's the same story with them-they all think they are lawyers and we don't know what we are doing. Some get taken forthwith...others get citations.
The routine may be similar daily but the calls and the self initiated officer activity keep it intresting. Also investigations are almost never simlar.
We usually end up staying a half hour up to several hours after every day because that's always when the complex calls come in. On a good day you can go home and sleep and then come in and repeat but on bad days you might as well stay up because you have to go to court or some type of required training early in the morning.
Many times you will have to come in on your day off to make phone calls to complaintants, victims and witnesses because your off day seems to be the only time when they are able to answer the phone. Typically a victim will call several months after an incident has occuried and expect you to remember all the details. It's also fun getting subpoenas and trying to figure out what you arrested people for 3-7 months ago.
