I know how some people are going to respond: "Well you are gonna die anyway from [xyz]; You can get cancer from breathing regular air; It feels good so I do it anyway; It's my life let me die the way I want." Are any of these responses justification for you smoking?

Its better than eating all the time, it's something that occupies you, its a social thing and it's addicting. It sucks but this is all true.

Hope that helped =)

Smoking is an addiction!! I have smoked for over 30 years. I have quit quite a few times. Right now I haven't smoked a cigarette for a year and a half. I quit twice before for two years. I have also quit for 3 months a couple times. I have also been chewing Nicorette for the year and a half this time. When I stopped chewing the gum for a couple days I was really tempted to smoke a cigarette so I got more gum. I quit because I couldn't breathe that well. I also just found out in December 2006, that I have Multiple Myeloma, (blood cancer), that isn't caused by smoking. You just never know and that is how alot of people justify their smoking. It's a daily struggle for someone who is physically addicted to nicotine and sometimes you have bad times where you might give in. Other people I know who have quit say they don't have any desire for a cigarette. I believe they are the ones who were not really addicted to the nicotine, which is a powerful drug!!

I used to smoke so if my memory serves me well, its because I was full of energy and life and thought I would live forever.

It limits your social life

It makes you stink

It makes you justify waisted opportunities

It is used as a crutch so that you don't have to give something up in exchange for a better quality of life.

It is used hand in hand with alcohol

People who smoke believe that cancer doesn't apply to them

Peojple who smoke and get cancer other than their lungs still think it doesn't apply to them when the body is a garden, not car parts.

People under the age of 27 usually are the ones who justify smoking and say it doesn't cause cancer. They are the ones who haven't seen their friends and siblings die of cancer yet.

Those who still smoke after 27 and have witnessed their friends and siblings drop like flies don't have the energy to care anyway.

I agree that it usually starts out as an image thing, but people keep doing it because its addicting.
And the person who said it does not cause cancer because it does not cause it 100 percent of the time is a fool. Its like saying since getting shot in the head does not cause death 100% of the time, so it does not kill you.

Most people don't choose to smoke. They get addicted and can't stop. I have been trying to quit for a while and it is very hard. Non-smokers don't realize how challenging it is to break the habit. We know it isn't good for us, most of us get that health rant almost every day. You aren't telling us anything that we didn't already know,.

My answer is simply this. Smoking does not cause cancer. In order for something to "CAUSE" something, it has to happen 100% of the time. Smoking may have contributed to cancer in the long scheme of things. I say may, because who is to prove that the old man with lung cancer who smoked wouldn't have died from cancer if he hadn't smoked. That my friend is hard to prove!

Because some can't see the big picture. I have a close relative that is literally dying from lung cancer.. and she won't put down the smokes. It hurst the rest of the family to see it, but it's not like you can strap her to the bed and keep her from doing it. God gave us the ability to choose.. and sometimes we choose wrong.

Simply because the addiction is hard.
It's no different than asking a drug addict why do they keep doing drugs even though they know it can kill them.

It's addiction. Some people have the will power to just quit, some people need help to quit, some people are to embarrassed to ask for help to quit.
We all know it's bad for us, but unless you have been addicted to cigarettes, you don't know how hard it is to "just quit".

You do it when your a teenager,,,then you get addicted,,,alot of people that smoke regret their decision to ever have started, they always want to quit, but it's an addictive drug that some people just cant let go of,,and if they have tried to quit heaps and heaps of times and have failed,,,it's embarrassing and they just make up the excuse,,"im not ready" "i enjoy it" to help cover up their shame and embarrassment of failing to quit.
