Vali is first a monkey. It is indeed amazing that in the ancient times even monkey were intelligent enough to do tapas.
Valli also did his prayer, tapas. He though being a monkey was having intelligence of a human.
But they way in which he humiliated Sugriva and forcfully took over Sugrivas wife made him to slide down from human intelligence level to Animal level.
Animals are not fought but hunted. Since Vali slided to animal level ( His humaness became low) he was hunted by Lord ShriRama.
Lord Shri Rama also explained the same when Vali asked this same question to him at deathbed.

That's not how the story goes.
Vali won a battle and took Sugriva's wife as his own. Rama said no and killed Vali. Vali was still in warrior caste though close to Brahma caste and took his next birth. It didn't matter because he didn't feel pain yet. Rama and Sugriva are still friends.

Earlier I thought that it was not fair to kill Vali behind the bushes. But when I read more and then I feel it was fair.
Vali had a boon from god that whoever comes in front of him during war then his half strength will go to Vali.
Secondly Vali himself was leading immoral life.He had taken wife of Sugriva inspite of his own wife advising him this is ag ainst the moral. Then he banished Sugriva from the kingdom .
So when the man be it of any centuries misuse his or her power then do we have to think to kill him / her as per the rules of morality ? When the person never followed moral rules throught his life then why one has to think for him morally ?
Rules are for those who understand.
Had Vali lead a honest, moral life then Lord Ram had not taken this step. Lord Ram is himself the follower of morals.
Lord Ram too took great pains in his life which sets an example.

Yes it is fair Lord Rama Killed Vali..
The story on this goes like this...
In the Hindu epic Ramayana, the vanara Vali was king of Kishkindha, a son of Indra and the elder brother of Sugriva. He was killed by Rama, an avatar of Vishnu.
A depiction of Rama killing Vali during the fight with Sugriva. Note the arrow cuts through the seven treesHe was famous for the boon that he had received, according to which anyone who came before him lost half his/her strength to Vali, thereby making Vali invulnerable to any enemy. Hence Rama slew him with an arrow in his back. Rama punished Vali for his evil deeds. It is said that Vali was reborn as the hunter Jara who killed Lord Krishna by his arrow in the Dwapara Yuga.
Vali had been known as a good and pious vanara-king, but had been too arrogant to listen to Sugriva after his brother had sealed the entrance to a cave in which Vali was fighting a rakshasa. Sugriva had mistaken the blood flowing out of the cave to be his brother's, blocked the entrance to the cave with a boulder and left for Kishkindha, assuming that his brother was dead. When Vali had emerged victorious over the rakshasa, he had found that the entrance to the cave was blocked (not a problem for his strength), and had then discovered Sugriva ruling in his place.
An enraged Vali also learned that Sugriva had married his "widowed" wife. Sugriva tried to explain the situation to Vali, but Vali would not listen. Vali banished Sugriva from the kingdom, and held the latter's wife captive in his own palace. Sugriva fled into the forest, where he met and formed an alliance with Rama. The two hatched a plan to topple Vali from the throne. Sugriva challenged Vali to a fight. When Vali sallied forth to meet the challenge, Rama emerged from the forest to shoot and kill him with an arrow. Thus, Sugriva was able to usurp the kingdom and to lead the monkey army in the service of Rama...

I am devotee of the Humanity and hence of Lord Rama also.
Punishing Bali was a fair act of the Lord.
You know in then & to days Hindu society wife of younger brother is to be treated as daughter (in some society widow of younger brother can be married as giving protection to her), and Bali, while Sugriva was alive has captured his wife on concieving some misunderstanding and without hearing justified truth. Further by punishing one if the rules for mass are protacted it is not un-fair.
The Lord punished him, from hiding behind bushes, because if one comes to fight Bali infront he (Bali) aquires 50% strength of that person.

Its is fair !
why ?
first of all by killing vali, whom did he end, His own energy returned back to him.
secondly, vali got salvation. how many great souls gets salvation directly by the gods own hands. Vali also confirmed this before he died.
third, Vali or any other par tin this universe is nothing but the part of Rama ( Hari ) and expansion of his own energy. So being the owner and proprietor he can take his energy back when he feels its no more needed.
(
Dear Wikilion,
>>don't u know a very simple logic that killing is a sin, one
>>need not kill another person to reign over his supremacy
You still need to understand that no soul can be ended. no one can be really dead. "die" is an English term, in other cultures it is called Mruthyu ( transformation ) and similar words. and lately even in English we use "passed away" not dead right, Please review your basics before trying to understand advanced concepts . This is my sincere advice for your own development.
)

Rama killing valli was not correct. Sugriva brother of Vali had a secret and illicit affair with Valli's wife and one day he say it and got wild. So he started quarreling with Sugriva. Rama was supporting Sugirva saying that in monkeys it is allowed to enjoy other monkey's wives. so he killed vali and helped Sugriva to have sons like Angadha etc.

It is quite fair enough for Lord Rama to kill Vali from behind the bushes. Lord Rama set a good example for Hindus and taught Hindus how to behave. This act of Lord Rama should not be impugned. Millions of Hindus worship and pray Lord Rama and follow that teaching. Hinduism is based on such teachings. It is improper to criticise and humiliate.

Lord Rama had killed so many demons/and all who are against morality. He was "KHATRIYA"(a Person who is a warrior). And he cannot kill Bali face to face. Why? So many have explained this.
