Abraham heard 'voices' from God telling him to kill his son. Schizophrenics hear the same thing. What's the difference?

22:1 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.

22:2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.

22:3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ***, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.

22:4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.

22:5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ***; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.

Abraham is simply the first documented case of schizophrenia.

22:6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.

22:7 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? 22:8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.

22:9 And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.

22:10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.

22:11 And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.

22:12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God,

For Grim Reaper and the other two--why can't you see that these are the same issue? Hearing voices is hearing voices, and schizophrenics' voices often tell them to back off the first few times, too.

well here is the difference. when one person suffers from delusion it is called mental illness. when many people suffer from delusion it is called religion.

Abraham under no circumstances sacrificed his son Isaac. And God under no circumstances meant for him to realize this. the factor is that Abraham enjoyed God so as that watching how the Pagans around could sacrifice their firstborn out of affection and faith, he might desire to have had a dream that his God Whom he enjoyed so might desire to be served with the comparable power of affection. in step with risk the entire element befell symbolically, so as that Abraham might desire to comprehend the situation of Israel in the international. For Isaac, a lamb replaced into taken instead. For the international, Israel under the emblem of Isaac. Jephthah replaced right into a bastard. yet there's a convention that he did no longer sacrifice his daughter. She replaced into fairly condemned to stay the existence of virgin for the the remainder of her existence.

I like the way you think.. Kind of raises some interesting questions doesnt it? why would an all knowing deity need to tell someone to kill their child, just so it could see that the person feared god.... if god is all knowing and knows what is in your heart then why would he even have to do something like that? wouldnt god just know before ever doing that what the result would be? Schizophrenia really does explain it quite adequately... I mean why is it that people can accept a person heard voices and did what they said and not equate that with a mental illness???

It's a story. In the end because Abraham listened to the voice that he knew to be God, he was greatly rewarded. It's a documented case of great faith - not schizophrenia.

The voices don't usually tell the schizophrenics to stop because it was just a test.

And Solomon had Bipolar disorder.
But so did Saul.
Funny how people can kill in the name of religion and "hear" voices. But today unless you are safely in the confines of a "bible believing church" you don't hear from God.
It's only the Believers that hear you see?
But believers are in all religions, so if all religions teach that every other religion is going to hell, I guess all religions go to hell.

Now that you mention, not a whole lot of a difference. It's okay when God tells you to kill people, but when Satan tells you to do it, they give you a cozy little room and a snug little outfit.

Yes that's the answer. Everyone who thinks they've heard the word of god was hallucinating.

Your conclusion assumes that there is only one way that people hear things.

If you are looking for reasons to deny the validity of the Bible, keep reading. Many people that do this convert into believers!
