Whilst I agree 100% with all that has been said about card readers - I've never used anything else since I started to use a digital camera in 2000. Remember, however, that there are some compacts that have a small internal memory and pictures stored on that can only be downloaded by connecting the camera to the computer. As these also take a card of one sort or another, it may be possible to transfer the pics from that internal memory to the card. You don't say what model camera you are using, so I can't be anymore helpful, except to say that you should be able to download a new driver from the manufacturers website.

If you get a card reader, no additional software is necessary. This is not only faster, but it saves your camera batteries. Your computer or printer may even have a card reader built into it. I have enough USB ports that I just leave it plugged in all the time.

First of all, be sure there are some pictures on the card. Plug the card reader into an open USB port. Plug the card into the appropriate slot on your card reader. I use Photoshop Elements and as soon as I plug my card into the reader, it starts its own card reader and displays a thumbnail of every picture on the card.

If this does not happen automatically, open your photo editing software. Do whatever you usually do to open a file, but click on the selector where you can change drives. Your card reader will be assigned a new drive name that will be one letter higher than you ever saw before, such as "Drive G:" or such. Then, just double click on the name of the file you want to open and it will appear in your photo editor.

You can buy various kinds of card readers to accomodate many different memory cards pretty much anywhere that they sell digital cameras. Even WalMart has decent card readers by major manufacturers.

I totally agree with Dr. Sam. Just to simplify things, get an all in one card reader (about $8.00). Please do not bother to download the camera's special software as a card reader and a photo editor will do the job well. With this set up, you can do almost anything, because the computer will recognise it (your card) as another drive. You can copy, delete images and also format your card. Happy clickings.

you dont need the program. Just hook up your usb, from your camera to the computer. Go to My Computer, you should see your camera name. Click on your camera either internal memory or memory card. The pics will come up, just copy them to a designated folder.

Its a great idea to get a card reader but if your camera has special features that needs its driver then it is better to download the driver.
for example: my sony Handycam can act as a web cam but i have to install its driver to use this feature.

if you have trouble finding the driver just post the model number and the maker of your camera and i'll try to help you.

I think you are saying that the software that came with it is corrupted, right? If so, you can normally go to that products website and download the software or call their 1-800 number. Good luck!
