Some examples:

1.
"Should I go to the park with Alex?" =
"Do you think it would be the right thing for me to go to the park with Alex?"
or "Would it be good if I went to the park with Alex?".

2. "I should read that book" = "it would be advisable for me to read that book" or "it would be good for me to read that book"

3. "You shouldn't sleep in class" = can mean "don't sleep in class" (ie a command) or, more leniently, "it's not a good idea for you to sleep in class"

You should do...... is definitely a direction you are giving someone, not necessarily a command; unless you have an, "or less...." following it.

The strength of "should" depends on the sentence, from being minor to major; and can be quite annoying if used the wrong way.

Ask specific questions, and I'll try to help.

It's similar in meaning to "ought" however that's close to a command whereas "should" is more of a suggestion.

"You should go apologize" for example.

( asking for some one to go somewhere )
You should go to the store for me.

( asking a question about a problem )
should there be another nail in the wall?

( asking an intuitive question )
should you go to the park?

( making a statement )
there should be more safety measures implemented.

( giving advise )
shouldn't you think twice about your decision?

Should means that you will not make a person do someting, but that it would be good for them to do it.
For example:
Read this book.- You HAVE TO read this book.
You should read this book.- PERHAPS IT WOULD BE GOOD if you read this book.
