Know how the spine looks like by getting into an overview of neuroanatomy, like being familiar with the divisions of the spine (cervical, thoracic and lumbar). It may be a pain in the butt having to go through anatomy, but just get the gist and you'll soon find this helpful. Log on to google.com or accoona.com and type in spine on the search tab and diffrent websites will offer you information.

A good place to start is know your anatomy, so nice atlas would help, so you know when I say I have bulging disk between L5 and S1, you have some idea where it is. Netter's Atlas would be my recommendation.

Also no doubt that you'll need to know specific diseases or conditions, a nice pathology book perhaps not medical school level but instead nursing path books are generally more straight forward and easier to understand without the heavy science background.

For a kinda cliff notes of medicine books, there are these review books called "High Yield" series in all subject matters for medicine. Quick and direct, not thorough by any means but gets the main points down.

there is a book called "grays anatomy" which will tell you everything you need to know. Yes, the show is based off of the book if you are curious. I will warn you, the book is fairly in depth and at times challanging to understand, so unless you have a fairly advanced knowledge already it may be out of your comprehension ability. If that is the case, id sugjest just "googling" it, im sure you will find plenty of good info.
