If I told you I talked to an invisible, imaginary being, you would think I was mentally ill. But if you claim you talk to God, no one thinks you're mentally ill. What gives?

That's because they are strong unit of loony people and they will be "right" all the time so for them to talk to an imaginary friend name "god" is sane since there is a manual that goes with it.

As long as it falls under the category of spirituality and religious belief, you can have a stuffed purple talking dinosaur for a god and still won't be considered crazy.

some of them are, but the majority of them are still what professionals consider "functional" meaning that they can survive adequately in society without need for a caretaker
