Death of Abhimanyu caused the righteous war to take turns.
The way Abhimanyu was slaugthered the dharma of waging rigtheous war was torn apart.
Karna also had his shortcommings, he was also one of those who were present in the court and did not stop Duryodhana or Dushasana from humiliting Dropadi and the Pandavas.
A true friends leads his friends towards righteousness. But he failed to act there.
Karna also knew his fate on the dawn of the day he went to fight against Arjuna.
Lord Krishna knows whats best for Karna. He knows He is ordering to kill a dead snake(Karna). Karna lost everything and if he died in anyother way it would not bring him honour. To honour him and his great deeds he ordered Arjuna to Kill him. For Kshatriya its a great honour to die in a righteous war that also by the hands of great warrior like Arjuna.

At the end of the day Lord Krishna relieved Karna from all his miseries, of course you have to pay for ones misdeeds and so he did by immense suffering. Then got liberated...at the highest level died in front of Lord Krishna!

When mother Kunti visited Karna secretly, she extracted a promise from Karna, that he will not use the potent 'Nagasthra' twice. Secondly she will have her five sons alive. If Arjuna is slain in the battle, Karna will remain otherwise Arjuna will survive and Karna will be killed. But the reason for Krishna ordering Arjuna to kill Karna when he was removing the wheel of the chariot from mud is that Arjuna may not survive once Karna ascends his chariot and start his fight.

These are the reasons I can find.
Since Lord Krishna is the supreme reality and the knower of all, obviosly he knows about Karna's cursed fate.He was cursed to die helplessly, his chariot was cursed to sink and he was cursed to forget all knowledge about divine weaponry when he needed it the most.
So under these conditions,Karna was supposed to die the way he did.And of course Karna had played an indirect role in Abhimanyu's death and he had insulted Draupadi.
But overall if you really analyze Arjuna and Karna this is what it took to really bring Karna down.
Curse of having chariot sunk
Curse of forgetting how to summon divine weaponry
Curse of dieing helplessly
Loss of celestial armour
Loss of celestial earings
Loss of the golden tooth (when he is finally on the ground,he plucks the tooth out and gives it to Lord Krishna when asked for it,unless its removed he cannot die)
Loss of moral when he continuosly hears praise about Arjuna from Shalya his charioteer who loves the Pandavas and is their uncle
The knowledge that Arjuna is his brother,in his conversation with Lord Krishna before the battle,he explains how difficult it will be to aim his arrows at his own brother
The fact that Arjuna did a puja before the battle,he got celestial weapons from Maya,he also gets various celestial weapons from the other Demi Gods
This is what it took to kill Karna, and yet he put up an excellent fight, even Lord Krishna respects him and thinks him very dear as a soul.
Even with all of those things holding him back he was able to wound Arjuna severely during the battle,he is responsibe for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of warriors in Kurukshetra (according to the book I read) and he killed numerous generals. But fate is fate, and Karna had to die.Had Karna not been killed that day,the Battle of Krukshetra would have been lost,it would go on much longer, and many more warriors would die,it was the only way Arjuna could possibly kill Karna,in fact it took a celestial weapon to do it.If Karna's life had not ended in that manner, they would be evenly matched forever, despite Karna's lack in the knowledge of celestial weapons and all of his disadvantages.

Karn was invinciblke as his Dharma was sae guarding him.but theinvincible karna was in the side of an unjust king on the side of adharma.so he woud e safegurading adharma for eve if he lived .So Krishna begged Karna to part with his dharma and offer its effects to himslef in the guise of a Brahmin. Karna who is notd for his philanthrophy gifetd his Dharma to the Brahmin .sokarna lost the protection of the goodes of Dharma . At that time Krisna asked Arjuna to shoot his arrow to kill Karna .
It was because the person was on the side of Adhrma , he had to be killed for the establishment of dharma .

Karna is one of my favourite charachter from Mahabharat.
I too feel bad about this . But Karna had many curses behind him. Secondly he had made a friendship with a wrong person Duryodhana. Anyone who makes friendship with a wrong person has to pay price. Karna was indireclty linked to Abhimanyu's death. Abhimanyu was alone when he was killed. He was surrounded by many well known warriors who killed him together.
He had insulted Draupadi in the king's open chamber.
So there is no use to follow moral way for the person who himself was influnced by the wrong person.
This will always be the bad twist that Karna was a brave person who liked moral way of life but throughout his life he was supported by Duryodhana and thus to repay his friendship Karna stuck to him knowingly he is Pandava's eldest brothers.
Duryodhana made him king of Angad and thus he had not choice but to remain with him.

Both arun and univers have explained it b'fully
Krishna is god and he is not bound by vows and morals and ethics... for him finishing the negativity is main job
besides things mentioned by arun and uni., karan had called his sister in law a prostitute, and despite shri krishna telling him that he is in fact brother of pandavas, he still decided to fight..
Krishna even promised him to make king of pandavas, in case he changed his mind..but still he held on to negativity of Kauravas...his fate was sealed, the day he did not accept krishna's proposal
