This has nothing to do witht he War in Iraq or lack of sufficient troops. The percentage of US military forces actually committed to the Afghan, Iraq and Terror War efforts is quite small in comparison to the total number of active and reserve personnel. And I'm including those who are involved outside of the theatre of operations. The US has approximately 1.5million individuals on active duty plus approx. 1.3million on reserve. Not including National Guard units which are State troops.

Fact is, the Federal gov has no authority to do what you ask. This is a State matter. The Gov can, if he so chooses, use the State's Guard for that purpose but most States refrain from using the Guard simply because they dont want to spend the money. In the absence of a Federal emergency declaration, it is on the State's dime.

Maybe this is a news flash, but most of the National Guard units and Reserve units are in Iraq. And active duty military folks don't fight fires here at home...that is a domestic issue.

That's a really good question.
For decades now the USA has spend hundreds of billions$ every year on a standing military to guard against a non-existent military threat and invader, while its responses to natural disasters remains 3rd world (or worse) to this day.
Amazingly gullible and stupid people. Just amazing.

Why not get all the fat a*** who are collecting benefits & social to go fight the fires, make them work for the free money they have been getting for years.
The military is not a firebrigade.
