Has your friend's mom been diagnosed with schizophrenia or is it a diagnosis made by your friend? Diagnosis by a non-professional is usually wrong. If she has been diagnosed by a psychiatrist she is probably on medications which help relieve but do not prevent symptoms. If your friend is the one who is upset by the disorder and your mother's behavior then he needs to find a support group for a family with mentally ill (schizophrenic) members.
Some support groups are listed for the USA and Canada at:
www.schizophrenia.com/coping.html, and:
www.helpguide.org/mental/schizophrenia_treatment_support.html.
Contact the local chapter of the "National Alliance for the Mentally Ill". It can be found by typing the organization's name (in quotes Previous) into Yahoo! search and a number of links comes up.
I hope this helps; good luck, good health, peace and love!

I have schizophrenia and it sounds like your friend's mom needs immediate counseling, perhaps from a telephone hotline. They could calm her down and give her instructions on what to do, where to go and refer her to a local psychiatrist. She may even need an ambulance to take her to a mental hospital for immediate treatment.
I take Zoloft, Wellbutrin and Abilify and do not have any symptoms for 4 years now. Medication is the best way to control schizophrenia. I hope you get her help very soon.

(spell check would help me to interpret your meaning)
People with disorders, such as your friend's mom, usually have a Dr. or therapist they see often. The therapist would have discussed with her a "safety plan" of what to do or who to call when such episodes recurr. She needs to actually get her notes or her therapist's business card out and read the instructions of what she is supposed to do when she is feeling upset.
One of the options is usually to call the therapist on the phone, and let the professional help her to settle down.
Hopefully the family will be supportive and not "in her face", but will be closeby to assist her in staying safe.

See schizophrenia at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris on page 7: check out, and copy/print relevant parts and give to your mother, for her to give to her friend.
