She hasn't been to a kennel or around other animals at all! It just started this evening and it's consistant. It is 12:30 in the am where I'm at and this started around 8pm or so. Could stress cause it maybe? I'm under a tremendous amount of stress and maybe she is stressing as well.

Dogs don't catch colds, etc so a cough is generally a concern. If he is eating and drinking normally, I'd watch him for a day or two and if it doesn't stop, I'd call my vet for an appointment. Could very well just be a minor irritant in the throat (seed, splinter, etc).

I know you rulled this out but, even if it were kennel cough, it almost always goes away on its own so treatment is not needed unless it gets noticeably worse (means it could be a secondary bacterial infection that antibiotics can treat - they have no affect on kennel cough since it is a viral infection).

Kennel cough incubates for several days before it becomes apparent. It is very very saily transmitted between dogs. Dogs don't have to be in a kennel to get it . As an owner of 3 dogs - are you SURE that your dog hasn't interacted with other dogs? Sniffed noses, passed by, ran into on walk? Went to the dog park? At a regular park? Today alone we "ran into" 5 dogs outside on our walk.

But call your vet. I called my vet when they were closed and since my dog was coughing so much, I just recorded it on their answering machine - worked brilliantly - they called me back first thing in the morning.

ps if it is kennel cough, waiting until Monday isn't going to kill him - may drive you nuts, but he's just gonna keep on coughing :)

pps - did he do any heavy pulling on a leash on a walk recently? Sometimes - with the warmer weather, any pulling will irritate their throat and they cough - just like a person would if you got choked :)

Hi - My dog recently went through 2 months of treatment for Valley Fever, which is only found in the southwest part of the USA, in the lower desert regions. It started with a cough and eventually led to coughing up white foamy phlegm, lethargy, loss of appetite, and weight loss. Dogs can also get pneumonia, upper respiratory infections, colds, things that can get lodged in the throat from grass and weeds, parvo, and even a collapsed trachea. It could be many, many things. I did a lot of "homework" about dog cough when my dog was sick! Continual coughing isn't normal. I know almost everyone has told you to see a vet and it's probably the only solution to finding out what is really going on. I hope your dog feels better and you find the cause. I know how scary it is when they are sick!

when dogs cough its never a good thing. ive had two different dogs that have come down with something horrible, horrible and they both started coughing. one dog had kennel cough and the other had parvo. now both those things, if not treated, can hurt even possibly kill any dog so i suggest tomorrow morning you take your dog to be checked at the local vet

It could be kennel cough. Has he been in contact with another dog recently, like a stay in a kennel? See the vet about it, because kennel cough can be treated.

if it started quite suddenly and hasnt stopped then it sounds like there is something irritating her throat.
open her mouth and have a good look deep inside - is it red or swollen? if so, then theres something irritating her. maybe something is stuck, or something she ate - have you sprayed chemicals within a few hours of the time she started?

other than that shes probably just developing a cold or flu.

if it doesnt stop in a day or two, or it gets worse or she has any other symptoms, take her to the vet.

I would take your dog to the vet, because it just started it could any number of things. minor conditions could be dry throat because of the change in weather, cold and the such. serious conditions could include a heart problem, or lung infection. when your pet is sick, though the answers on yahoo answers may be informative, nobody here can diagnose your pet, a vet visit is always your best choice if your pet is sick

You have already said your dog wasn't in a kennel . He does need to go to a vet though 'cause he could have something hung in his throat. His sinuses could be bothering him. Normally, they will have runny eyes or nose also if it is this.If it was going on for a while though, it could even be trouble with his heart or even Heart worms. Hopefully, you have him on Heart worm medicine though. Could be problems with his lungs.Get him checked though, he's worth it.

Did you just board you dog somewhere or get him groomed? Or been around other dogs? The first thing that pops in my head is Kennel Cough/Bordatella. It's an airborne disease that is found a lot in boarding and grooming places. It makes them miserable and obviously makes them cough a lot. Get him to a vet as soon as you can. Make sure he has all his vaccines. Good luck.
