Plus, it's a rental. Should I hide out in the attic to get away from the landlord? The light's pretty good up there now. Or should I extend the skylight down through the ceiling of my apartment?

It's easy to make a skylight with a shotgun. Just shoot toward where you want to see the light.
Easy.

A skylight needs to go through the roof to gather direct sunlight. But cutting a hole in the roof of a rental may get you arrested.
Either check with the landlord (and maybe hire a pro) or cover the hole.

You my friend may be in serious trouble.If you are lucky the landlord will evict you and make you pay for repairs.If not he could charge you with a criminal offense such as malicious destruction of private property, evict you,make you pay for repairs and blackball you if he is called for a referance. This property is not yours to do as you wish just because you pay rent.You don't own it.

so you didnt actually cut a hole in your roof , you cut it in the ceiling, if you had cut it in the roof there would be no attic above it...mom always said , "theres no sense in being dumb if you cant prove it once in a while"

Well here is what you do.
Go to Home Depot buy some plywood and some shingles
(ones that match your current roof)
